"All washed up..."

People say that once a year, wolves charge from the pass of Moytura to feast upon the inhabitants of the nearby villages. This has happened only once, but the locals are forever finding dead livestock strewn across their fields on the first full moon of spring. Their livelihood under threat, the inhabitants paid a wizard to come and scour the landscape for the terror. He failed. Now every year, on the first full moon of spring, bounty hunters flood to the area to see if they can be the one to kill The Beast.

Scarlet Falcon had heard this tale and many variations on it more times than he cared to remember. The only thing on his mind was how to remove the rainwater that had saturated his boots. Ever since Scarlet Falcon and his party of Kai had come to the woods of southern Sommerlund, the rain had poured from the sky with a vengeance. None of the score or so bounty hunters, who had flooded the area in search of the Beast, had been able to track it, so most of them had retired into a temporary, alcoholic hibernation. Scarlet Falcon's party had tried tracking earlier that day, hoping their superior skills would conquer the rain, but it was to no avail. Scarlet Falcon now sat on a rickety bed in his room, drying his clothes.

[Why spend hundreds of gold crowns on a trip to the Maakenmire, when you have a perfectly good swamp on your very own doorstep (?)]

He wasn't in a very good mood. The rain had ruined his first taste of command. The only time he had been able to exercise his new rank was to say 'everyone back inside' or 'sit tight, it'll stop raining soon'.

[Whose bright idea was this, anyway?] Came another sullen thought.

It was Lone Wolf's, obviously. Seeing that Scarlet Falcon was one of the monasteries better hunters, he had assigned the newly promoted Savant to the task of investigating this horror. It seemed like the ideal task to group together some of the Kai's hunters and send them out to Moytura to get to the bottom of the annual sheep massacre. He had encountered problems before leaving, the junior Kai going with him being especially irritating. Another job had been to dissuade Steel Fox from wearing his usual bright colours and dress in something a little more discreet. The young boy would have only been in camouflage behind a blue tree, which were not commonplace in southern Sommerlund.

The rain hammered down relentlessly on the window of Scarlet Falcon's room, the water running down to drip in miniature waterfalls off the sill. The grass outside had been beaten away to reveal the once luscious topsoil, that was now being pounded relentlessly by the unforgiving rain. To add insult to injury, what small leads the Kai had on the Beast's whereabouts were being washed away with the mud.

Scarlet Falcon went back to the wood carvings and charcoal pictures he had bought. All depicted the Beast, as described by eyewitnesses. They all were embellished with extra claws and teeth and in one case, an extra head. Scarlet Falcon shuddered.

[I hope these are made up descriptions!]

Taking a piece of charcoal, Scarlet Falcon skilfully copied the details from the pictures that seemed to appear on all or most of them and that seemed within the realms of possibility. He was left with what seemed to be a large wolf, bigger than a doomwolf, with red eyes and lots and lots of teeth. There was a swatch of fur on Falcon's bed, which had been found near a dead sheep one year. It was a mottled black and grey colour. It had cost him 5 gold crowns, so he hoped it to be genuine. The woman who owned certainly didn't want to sell it at first. There was a knock at the door.

"Come in"

It was Star Hunter. The young man's hair was plastered to his head after just a short trip across from the other tavern in town. The inns were too small to house all of the Kai; so Star Hunter was in one and Steel Fox joined Scarlet Falcon were in another.

Star Hunter saluted respectfully and then sat down on the chair in Falcon's room.

"Senior, it is nearly midnight. The Beast is said to strike again soon. The bounty hunters are getting ready" Scarlet Falcon detected a hint of disgust in Star Hunter's voice at the mention of the mercenaries.

"OK, gather the others together, we'll meet in this bar in a few minutes"

Star Hunter left the Savant to prepare himself for the night's watch/hunt. Scarlet Falcon put on his tunic and cloak, both still uncomfortably damp, and then moved onto the more serious business of weaponry. His mace was at his belt, alongside his quiver. His longbow would be pretty useless in the wind and rain, but he slung it on his shoulder all the same. His primary weapon would be a small, handheld crossbow. It would be powerful enough to resist the wind, at least more so than the long bow and the shots would be just as accurate (although lamentably slower).

Jogging down the stairs, Scarlet Falcon saw his companions waiting by the door, the bar virtually empty. Star Hunter and Steel Fox were all ready, dressed in browns and greens, with bows and weapons ready. Together, the Kai trooped out into the rain. Scarlet Falcon had to shout his orders in order to be heard over the deluge.

"Right, We Need to Go North! That's Where the Last Sighting of the Beast Was!"

Trooping through the water, the three Kai went north. Still the rain smashed down. Rain so hard, so intense, no one could see more than a foot. The water formed a blinding downpour loud as a waterfall. The world was a grey wall, where anything further away than a few metres was just an unknown. Scarlet Falcon's vivid hair was wet underneath his hood, smeared flat on his head. The bounty hunters he could smell in the distance were thrashing about mindlessly in the bushes. It was madness, hunting in this weather. The chances of catching the Beast were virtually zero.

And the Beast knew it.

It's first victim was a young hunter who had decided to bring a Bor gun with him, safe in the knowledge that nothing could withstand more than one blast from it. Powerful the weapon may be, but it was useless in this weather.

And the Beast knew it.

With virtually no sound, the Beast sprang from its hiding place. The young hunter turned and raised his Bor gun, his finger pushing the trigger. The flint crashed down into a thick mush that was the gunpowder. Before the man had realised his mistake, death was on him in a blur of fur and teeth, snarling and rending. Within seconds, the remains on the sodden ground weren't recognisable as a young man. The Beast had no need to eat its fill. There would be plenty of prey around tonight.

Another hunter prowled through the trees, the water running in great waves off her drawn sword. She had no stomach for this fight. She could tell the creature was near, so near she was certain it was behind her at every pace. She could take no more. The hunter snapped and ran, her sword left in a puddle, the least of her concerns. She ran for at least a minute before falling into a ditch. She twisted her ankle on the way down, but made no sound. Her tongue clove to the roof of her mouth and her hands were shaking. She tried to scream but no sound came. A twig snapped at her side.

It was the Beast.

It sat watching her, impassively, its huge jaws wet with its latest kill. It was just ten yards away and, even with the rain still pouring down, she could see its teeth and the bright streaks that were its claws. It yawned, the long red tongue lolling from its maw, licking its lips in anticipation of the kill. It howled for the sheer joy of it and the woman, not to be outdone, screamed at last as the Beast lunged.

[Steel Fox]

[Wet and cold! How fun !] thought Steel Fox as he sat near the fireplace in the common room of the inn. [For sure, it wasn't how I foresaw my first assignment…]

For months he dreamed of this moment. Since he joined the Monastery he awaited to go with other Kai out, to help the people of the Sommerlund and battle Evil. A childhood dream.

But now as he was part of this dream, it suddenly seemed less heroic than first thought.

[How have I been dragged in this ?]

It begun one week ago when he was training at the archery range at the Monastery. Scarlet Falcon came and told him he was part of group of Kai Lords sent under his leadership, to investigate the strange disappearances of livestock and people in Moytura. Steel Fox felt that being part of this team was great honour.

[If only I had known …,] he thought as he stared blankly at the fire.

Then the world begun to crumble around him. Quickly Steel Fox felt that he wasn't really at his place in this quest. His skill at the bow was poor at the best and his tracking skill well under those of Scarlet Falcon or Star Hunter. The only time he felt useful was when he has been able to convince an elder woman to sell her prized patch of fur. She believed that this fur patch was from the beast that stalked the country and that it would act as ward against it. And those stupid bounty hunters … Greedy, aggressive but no true courage. Most of them felt that the Lord's presence would cheat them out of their reward.

[If they had been much skilled in hunting and tracking than in drinking they would have caught it for a long time now !]

One day they even tried to drag the three Lords in a brawl, to teach them to be 'humble' they said. The team had to move to avoid the fight. And if this was not enough there was the rain. Heavy, endless rain. It has been raining since they arrived, and much of the tracks have disappeared in the mud. As if Nature approved the Beast acts and protected her against the hunters…

[Blast ! And the beast drawings look much more those of bogeymen that an actual creature …]

All this was hopeless.

****

Steel Fox was dragged out of his daydreaming by Star Hunter voice.

"It's near midnight," he said "It is time to ready yourself for the hunt."

Steel Fox nodded.

As he was walking to the room he shared with Scarlet Falcon he looked outside.

[It is still raining. With no moonlight, it won't be easy. This is pure madness …]

As he entered the small room he saw that Scarlet Falcon was already readying himself.

As he walked past Scarlet Falcon to take his still damp cloak and his trusty broadsword he saw that Scarlet Falcon had made a portrait out of the different descriptions of the beast. All that remained was a big, ugly wolf.

In case his broadsword would fail him, Steel Fox decided to get an extra dagger that he put in his left boot.

"I'm ready," he said.

"Okay. Let's meet the other then," said Scarlet Falcon.

****

[Hell must be like this,] he thought as the group walked out in the night.

The rain was like a wall of water always standing before them. And there was no silence or normal night sounds but only the loud sound of the rain falling…

Seconds felt like minutes, minutes felt like hours. Then, in the maddening darkness something happened. A scream of fear and pain echoed in the dark.

The Beast was there.

And they were the prey.

[Scarlet Falcon]

Scarlet Falcon's head snapped to one side at the sound of the howl.

"Everyone, to The East!"

The group turned and ran. As Scarlet Falcon ran, he fished his small crossbow from his cloak. As he pulled it out, the bolt fell from the stock. Cursing, no-one hearing him over the belting rain, he tugged another bolt from his belt pouch. Struggling in the wind and rain, he slid the missile into the crossbow and drew back the string. And just in time.

The Kai burst into a clearing and came face to face with the Beast. It was climbing out of a ditch, dragging a still thrashing body behind it. It turned and growled at the Kai lords then ran into the trees. But not far away. Scarlet Falcon could still smell it.

"In A Circle, Now!"

The Kai obeyed instantly and formed a rough circle, bows at the ready. No one moved. Scarlet Falcon pushed the sodden hood back from his head. He had to squint now to stop the rain from blinding him, but at least he had no blind spots. Licking rainwater from his lips, he waited. Nothing. Closing his ears to the pounding of the rain, he focussed all of his attention on the belt of trees ahead of him. His only role in life now was to watch these trees. He breathed deeply, filtering the smell of wet greenery out, concentrating for the telltale animal scent. The dying hunter had stopped moving and there was no sound emitting from the body. Scarlet Falcon could now not hear anything. The rain had faded into a nonsensical background sound. The apparent silence made his ears hum. He swallowed and the sound was clear as day, booming in his throat.

There was a rustling to his left.

As one, the ring of Kai straightened into a line facing the origin of the sound. Scarlet Falcon's hearing came flooding back, the rain deafening him. Still nothing.

There was a rustling to his left again.

The line swung to face the trees. Scarlet Falcon's fingers flexed over the crossbow's trigger. He took another deep breath and began to let his senses drift again. There was no need. In a blur of grey fur and muscle, the Beast sprang. Steel Fox dived to one side to avoid the claws aimed at his head. Scarlet Falcon spun round and fired his crossbow, but the Beast was already moving and springing again, this time towards Star Hunter. Star Hunter kept a nock on his bow as long as he could, wanting to be certain to score a hit, but the Beast was too fast. He had to dive face first into the mud to avoid losing his throat to the Beast. His arrow fell from his grasp, wasted. Scarlet Falcon desperately grappled in his belt for another bolt, the first slipping from his shaking fingers. He yelled aloud in frustration, then had to roll away from a paw swipe. The Beast towered over Scarlet Falcon, another paw raised to sweep down across his torso, when it howled in agony, snapped its jaws at the source of its pain. Star Hunter had got an arrow away from close range, but now jumped back again. Scarlet Falcon finally forced his crossbow bolt into place. He aimed very carefully at a point just below the base of the Beast's skull. If this didn't kill it, it would certainly paralyse it.

[Carefully, just pretend it's a bulls-eye].

His finger curling around the trigger, he began to apply the pressure. Then, from out of nowhere, the bounty hunters appeared. They stormed into the clearing, swinging their weapons and yelling. The Beast bounded away to the right and back into the trees. Scarlet Falcon forced his arm up in order to avoid shooting Steel Fox. For a moment, there was silence in the clearing, bar the beating of the rain.

"You Idiots!" Scarlet Falcon yelled.

The nearest bounty hunter was drunk and took the shout as an insult. Steel Fox strode over to explain, but the move was seen by the bounty hunters as an attack. Soon there were three bodies thrashing in the mud. Scarlet Falcon spotted Steel Fox in the melee and dragged him out. For a few seconds, the hunters just stood and stared at each other. Then slowly, a few choice insults lost to the wind and rain, the bounty hunters filed back to the village. Soon only the Kai were left. Steel Fox went to check on the body the Beast had dragged from the ditch, but it was far too late. Scarlet Falcon sighed. They were so close.

Post by Errin Famiglia, The Houndmaster IV, "A Mysterious Figure"

[Kalotar]

In an unknown cave within the mountains of Moytura, a mysterious figure sat upon a makeshift throne of rocks. He sat in total darkness amid a motley group of doomwolves, war dogs, and akataz sleeping on the floor, some inside the cave, some at the entrance. There he had been waiting patiently for his servants to return with news of the Beast. Sensing their return, he stood up and walked down from the pile of rocks that constituted his throne. As he did this, two wolves entered the pitch black cave, panting as though they had just ran a great distance, their fur wet from the stormy weather outside.

"So," said a rough voice, "You are back, I see. What news do you bring? Come here. Show me."

Something upon his chest glowed dully as one of the wolves approached him. Though a feral beast, it softly padded towards the man as if it were the most domesticated of household pets. It even allowed him to grasp it by the muzzle as he shifted its gaze to meet his own.

"The Beast!", exclaimed the man. "You have found it! I assume none of the hunters spotted you as you watched them fail to capture the creature. Such fools are they to try and slay such a magnificent creation! It matters not, though. For now I am aware of where the Beast lurks; It will soon serve me just as willingly as you do. Then those hunters shall pay dearly. But wait! There's more. Though an animal such as you would not recognize who some of the hunters were, I know my enemy when I see them. The Kai are here as well, eh? The young whelps! They are but an added bonus to this entire venture. First, I shall take control of the Beast. Then, I shall use it to slay the accursed Kai! With both myself and my pack to aid it, the Kai will surely fall! Sleep well, my pets, for tomorrow we hunt!"

And somewhere within a cave in the mountains of Moytura, a mysterious figure returned to his makeshift throne and began to laugh evilly within the darkness that surrounded him.

**** Kalotar's Coach Ride

Marik the trader sat on his side of the coach cabin, biting his tongue and regarding the one person sharing the journey with him. Up until the last half hour, Marik had been the lone passenger on this trip. But then the odd fellow across from him had appeared out of nowhere near the side of the road and had requested a ride from the coachman. So, Marik would have someone to talk to after all on this boring but necessary trip to the villages near the Moytura Pass. Still, the amiable trader had found himself desiring to stay silent. The robes the stranger wore and the staff that lay across his lap denoted one skilled in the ways of sorcery. Marik knew better than to say the wrong thing to the wrong wizard, so he had forced himself to keep his mouth shut. In the end, though, it was a hopeless battle; Marik was a talker by nature, and that nature betrayed his own desires of self preservation.

"Excuse me, sir," said Marik with a quiver in his voice, "Those white robes you wear, they mean you are of the order of the Crystal Star, do they not? That is, if I may ask."

"You may," replied the stranger. "And I am. If the robes did not tell you as much, perhaps this crystal star pendant around my neck would have been a clue too."

"And a beautiful pendant it is, sir. Allow me to compliment your medallion of silver and turquoise as well. I did not know members of the Brotherhood displayed themselves so richly!"

"They do not. This medallion is not connected to those of the Crystal Star, though I know of one other who has such a medallion as this. We received them as a gift for services rendered to the Zakhan of Vassagonia."

"Pardon my statement if it was too personal, kind sir. I was merely excited by the beauty of your finery."

"Sir, I shall most certainly pardon you, but only if you promise to stop calling me 'sir'. I am Kalotar, known to many as Kalotar the Unredeemed."

"And I am Marik, Marik the trader. Though I know not why you are called that which you are called, I can say that, from what I've encountered in my line of work, there is nothing that does not bear some value of redemption."

"Well put, friend Marik, but a man is not a piece of merchandise."

"True. I shall bother you no further on that subject. Rather, I would humbly ask what brings you to the Moytura Pass. Certainly, you are not here to trade wares with the local villagers as I do."

"It is a dream that has brought me along on this journey."

"A dream!" laughed Marik. "If all that you desire is to visit remote mountain villages, then you must be quite easily satisfied!"

"No, not that kind of a dream. An actual dream, or, rather, a vision that came to me in my sleep a couple days ago."

"I see. A wizardly image you had conjured up?"

"No, this came to me without being willed. I suppose it's an ability all those skilled in the mystic arts have. Some are just better at controlling it."

"Dare I ask what this vision was, good wizard?"

"It was of an evil that lurks within these mountains, an evil I have come to put a stop to before it can harm those I am sworn to protect."

"You speak of the Beast!"

"No, I do not, though you are close. The Beast is at the root of this, however, for it was the Beast that has caused several members of the Kai to come here in order to hunt it."

"And it is the Kai you are sworn to protect?"

"Aye, and it is an oath of my own choosing, required by myself alone and no one else. I do not know exactly who this evil one is who presents a danger to the Kai. The vision was not very clear, but it was clear enough for me to know that this servant of darkness will have an overwhelming advantage against them if I do not show up in time to even the balance of power. The Beast is the true wild card in all of this."

"Hmmm. Kai lords! Beasts! Mysterious villains! These are not matters a mere trader can conceive of. Rather, they are concerns of a wizard, and they must weigh heavily on your shoulders indeed. That being said, I shall bother you with my small talk no further. I thank you for your patience with me, Kalotar who is unredeemed, and wish you the best of blessings in dealing with your upcoming challenge. I am certain of your success, kind sir, and of that of the Kai."

With this, Marik fell silent, leaving Kalotar to return to contemplating what was in store once the villages of the Moytura pass were reached. And silent he stayed. He had spoke with a magician and had lived to tell the tale; For the rest of the coach trip, he would be busy figuring out which villages to go to next, as his original destination of Moytura was certainly out of the question now.

[Next Kalotar]

Post by Errin Famiglia, The Houndmaster V, "Meeting in Moytura, part 1"

[Kalotar]

It was early dusk when the coach pulled into the main village of the Moytura pass. None were there to receive it; none were there to board it to the next town on it's southbound journey. The streets themselves were bereft of people, as most had taken to their boarding whenever night fell during the season of the Beast.

From out of the carriage stepped the stooped form of Kalotar the Unredeemed, resplendent in his white robes of the Crystal Star Brotherhood. He bid farewell to the coach's only other passenger, a trader by the name of Marik who had decided to continue on to a new destination rather than brave the forces Kalotar had told him about during a brief discussion while travelling. The trader wished the mage well, then quickly shut the carriage door as a signal to the coachman to proceed on.

The Unredeemed surveyed the desolation as the coach creaked away. Not a body occupied the puddle-filled muddy streets, the storm of earlier in the day having now dissipated. To him, it was a welcome sight, as he did not feel comfortable among most men, preferring the company of Kai Lords and members of his order. Besides, he had magic to cast, and knew it was best when it was done away from the common folk.

Though he stood alone, he knew eyes were most like upon him, as he was on a main street and was probably being watched by a few curious villagers nestled in the nearby homes. He slowly walked into what constituted an alley in this town until he was fairly sure no one was still watching him.

From his robe he pulled out a hand-sized crystal ball which he could hold comfortably in his palm. His gaze focused on it as he spoke the incantation that invoked his mystical sight. Soon, he could see himself standing in the shadowy alley, the scene itself being represented in the orb of crystal in his hand. He began to shift the picture from his immediate surroundings to various areas within the town, reaching out his consciousness in search of the Kai currently dwelling nearby.

Many scenes came to his vision. In a dingy tavern, bounty hunters sat around drunkenly discussing what they'd do with the spoils that would come from slaying the Beast. In a small home, a father worriedly watched over his son and wife, their door bearing a thick board across it to protect against any nightly intrusion. In another home, an elderly woman sat before a roaring fireplace telling tales of the Beast to the small children around her.

All these were but brief glimpses until Kalotar came upon the scene he had been searching for. In a room within an inn, he recognized the lean form of the Kai Lord known as Star Hunter. Next to Star Hunter stood another young man bearing the telltale green cloak of the Kai. This one's red hair denoted him as Scarlet Falcon, a person Kalotar had never met before, but was known to be one of the hunting party who had come to confront the Beast. They both stood around a muscular youth who was lying in bed in what appeared to be a bad state. Kalotar guessed this may be the Kai known as Steel Fox, but could not tell for sure. The other men seemed to be concerned about the young one's condition.

For a moment, Kalotar worried that he may have arrived too late, that one of the Kai may have already fallen to the unseen enemy which the mage had travelled here to put a stop to. He sincerely hoped not.Now was not the time for worry, though. Having finally detected their whereabouts, The Unredeemed focussed his mind on the casting of yet another spell, one which would allow him to mentally contact the Kai Lord being viewed within the crystal ball.

"Star Hunter," thought Kalotar, the words forming in the mind of the one he named, "Fear not, for the voice you are hearing is that of Kalotar the Unredeemed, a member of the Brotherhood of the Crystal Star. We met recently when I was seeing off my friend and fellow mage Amthyst on her journey to Bor. Now, I am in the same village as you. I have journeyed from the Monastery on an urgent mission to intercept you and your brethren in the hunt for the Beast. Using my magical abilities, I have located you and sent forth this message. I shall now beset on my way to talk to you in person; The next knock you hear on the door of your room will most likely be mine."

With that, Kalotar ended his spellweaving, tucking his crystal ball back into his robe and heading towards where he perceived the Kai to be. Elsewhere, Star Hunter turned to the other Kai, "Excuse me, brothers, but we're about to have a visitor. A mage named Kalotar from the Brotherhood of the Crystal Star has telepathically informed me he will soon knock on our door."

[Kalotar]

The knock on the door startled Scarlet Falcon and Star Hunter. Though it was expected, it had interrupted the conversation which had began after Star Hunter had been telepathically contacted. They had been pondering the situation seriously. It was a surprise development and they had hoped it was indeed a Brotherhood mage that had magicked the Kai Lord. Magnamund was a dangerous world, and they were prepared for anything to happen.

Star Hunter stood back, hand on the hilt of his sword, as Scarlet Falcon slowly opened the door to their room, he himself ready to take action should the need arise.

As the door opened, they could see a tall, slightly stooped man in white robes standing in the aperture, a star pendant of crystal hanging upon his neck, a decorated staff in his hand.

"Yep, that's him", said Star Hunter, breathing a sigh of relief.

"Aye. The one that stands before you is Kalotar the Unredeemed.", stated the mage.

"He is also Kalotar the Unexpected.", added Scarlet Falcon.

"True. And I apologize for that. I would not have used my magic upon you without warning had I not felt the situation urgent. You must be Scarlet Falcon. It is always an honor to meet one of the Kai."

"As it is to make the acquaintance of a Brotherhood mage.", replied Falcon.

"Come in, friend Kalotar. We are anxious to hear what has brought you here from your teachings at our Monastery."

"That I shall tell you, my lord. But first, is that Steel Fox who lies thither? Is he well?"

"For the most part.", said Steel Fox hoarsely. He had been sleeping until moments ago when the knock had awoken him. "It is a mere cold that has me bedridden right now. I unfortunately fell victim to the foul weather that surrounded us while we hunted the Beast."

"At least it was not the Beast you fell victim to!", said Kalotar, visibly relieved that the Kai Lord was not seriously harmed. "Speaking of which, how goes the hunt?"

"Not good, Kalotar." came Star Hunter's answer. "We almost captured it earlier today. Then, due to the intervention of some idiot bounty hunters, the Beast escaped. Did you come because of the Beast? I'm afraid your journey was in vain. We can certainly handle the creature once the time comes. So I guess it isn't the Beast that has brought you here, is it?"

"Your perception is indeed keen, Star Hunter. No, if it were merely the Beast I felt threatened you, I would still be at the Kai Monastery, confident in your abilities to handle such a monster."

"So, we are threatened, are we?" Scarlet Falcon questioned. "From what? It must be serious to warrant your mysterious arrival here."

"Sadly, I cannot fully answer that, friend Falcon. I can merely tell you the circumstances that have brought me here. When it comes to magic, I have never focussed on the ability to perceive future events or create prophetic visions. However, I suppose it is something all of us mages can passively do, whether we specialize in it or not. A few nights ago, I had a disturbing dream. It was not conjured; It merely came to me. In this dream, I watched as three young men wearing cloaks of green chased a large wolflike creature into the forest. They entered a clearing only to watch the wolf turn to face them, murder in its red eyes. In the shadows stood a mysterious figure I could not make out. It seemed to be a man. It laughed evilly in the darkness as the wolf turned on the young men, chasing them as they had chased it. Joining the wolf in its chase were more shadowy forms, though these were decidedly not human. As a group they descended upon the men, and blood did spray upon the trees of the clearing. At this, the shadowy figure's laugh grew into a howl of victory. It was then that I awoke."

"A nightmarish vision indeed!", stated Steel Fox, clearly shaken. "It must have been terrifying, even for a wizard!"

"No, young Kai Lord. I was not terrified; I was angered!" At this, a fire of passion sprang into the eyes of the spellcaster. "Though we have not met, perhaps you have heard of the strange mage who came to teach magic at the Kai Monastery, the one who seeks redemption for reasons unknown. I am that mage, and the Kai are the key to my ultimate redemption! As long as Kalotar the Uredeemed lives and breathes, no harm shall come to the Kai Lords! Never! I will not allow that nightmare to become a reality! I cannot allow such a travesty to pass. After my dream, I asked around and quickly discovered that you three had come to the Moytura Pass to hunt the notorious Beast. It was then I knew that I must too come here to prevent that which I have foreseen. And come here I have."

Kalotar paused for brief moment, the flames of his emotion settling down.

"But I will go also, should you wish. You Kai are the masters of your own fate. I have told you my vision now. All I can do is humbly ask that you allow me to join you in your hunt for the Beast. Surely, I will not be as swift as you or as skilled in tracking the creature, but I offer my services nonetheless. What say you?"

"Star Hunter?", asked Scarlet Falcon.

Star Hunter thought for a second then spoke. "Kalotar, I only met you once. But Mage Amethyst thinks highly of you. It is known that you travelled all the way to Vassagonia to protect the Kai Lords Sharp Cat and Sun Cheetah. In that you succeeded. As Kai, we are indebted to you for having aided our brothers. If it would satisfy you to help us face this unknown threat you have envisioned, then I for one say you may join us as we seek out the Beast."

"As do I," added Scarlet Falcon.

"As do I," added Steel Fox.

"Then it is so," said Kalotar. "I must go now and reserve a room in this inn for myself. I am in need of rest after my coach trip. I suppose we shall all need sleep for the hunt will be resuming soon. I wish I possessed the spells to cure Steel Fox of his illness, but healing magic is mainly unknown to me."

"I shall be well soon enough, friend mage," replied Steel Fox.

"Indeed, my lord. Indeed."

[Marduk]

Three lone figures were galloping frantically Northwards on a dusty trail, as if their lives depended upon it. All were dirty and had several visible battle scars that had been obtained recently. One warrior was slightly slumped in his saddle.

"Oh, no, not again!" cried Marduk.

"What's wrong this time!?" asked Black Talon.

"I think that I lost my herb pouch in the fight, and my spare is back home!"

(smiling) "You mean this?" asked Black Talon as he lifted up a small brown pouch.

"Thank Ishir! I've never left without it before - guess we left in a bit of a hurry, huh?"

"Don't worry - I can heal. Remember?"

"Forgot...sorry. Vakeros are used to warriors using herbs, not healing! Ling, you okay?"

Managing a weak smile, Ling replied "Yea, I'm okay - a little help with my leg would be appreciated though!"

So after travelling at break-neck speed another hour, without the sight of anyone following, the three weary travelers slowed down and later stopped to set up camp for the night. Kai Master Talon made sure everyone's wounds were treated and dressed, before settling down to talk to Marduk.

Marduk exclaimed: "First the crazies, now damn bandits! Where are they going? And what about those wolves and dogs? Even the animals seem to be against me! Why does it seem that for some reason, no one wants us travelling this road?"

After saying that, he then started muttering under his breath: "It's probably those bloody druids! They'll pay! I'll kill them all...all of them! Those crazies will die...oh yes, they will die!"

So intense was Marduk in his personal vendetta, and so deep was his hatred, that it almost seemed as if his eyes flashed blood red...and he was no longer the same person.

Sensing Marduk's intense anger and anguish, Black Talon quickly tried to 'reign' his vengeance in and calm him down.

"It's a safe bet that it was the druids that hired the bandits - I noticed some of their handiwork amidst the bandits' bodies. Well, remembering what the old gypsie lady told us, I believe that it has something to do with her a great beast. But I wouldn't rule out the druids...they have many powers and controlling natural creatures is one of them! I don't know much about her skill, but I know something's gonna happen - and soon!" (Black Talon's Sixth Sense was warning him of impending danger.)

(Confused and shaken up, he tried to focus on something more tangible ... something he had more control over ... yet even that hadn't worked out right!)

"Well, I should have brought more gear at least! We're not as prepared as we should have been, and it's all my fault! ...Why is my father so stubborn? "

(Marduk made a mental check of all their gear: They had plenty of food and water, plus several vials of Laumspur and other elixirs; they even had 2 extra swords and daggers, but only one extra quiver of crossbow bolts!)

"I wish I'd brought more crossbow bolts! If I'd only not been in such a rush to leave home!" thought Marduk

"My Lord, want to talk? It's about how we left Dessi, isn't it? Your father is a proud man, who really wants the best for you. It wasn't your fault about your brother - your father knew that!" said Ling.

"Yes, but I don't feel like talking my old friend. And by the way, since we're not in Dessi and at dad's ...well don't call me 'My Lord' okay? Just use my name in public."

"Fine, Marduk - don't worry everything will be fine, you'll see. Right Master Talon?"

"Yea, we're only a little less than 2 days ride from Moytura, and from there it should be easy riding" replied Master Talon. (Black Talon hid his doubts and fears about what he felt...the darkness that was ever-present yet distant; he finally attributed it to stress and fatigue.) "Let's get some rest and be ready to move out at first light."

"I'll take first watch," volunteered Marduk. "Crazies, all of them! Even me..." He muttered. He quickly drifted off into deep thought about his recent problems and encounters.

[Marduk]

Just as the sun was rising, three tired travellers were breaking camp. It was a common scene that had been repeated over and over again during their journey. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary this morning; even the constant howling at nights had become a "normal" occurrence. This oddity had started three nights ago.... and it seemed as if the same wolves were travelling northwards too.

Besides pondering their new canine problem, the two Vakeros and the Sommending would relate stories and tales of battle, valour, and honour. The constant conversations and company helped the three friends grow closer together. Since the two Vakeros were intrigued by Sommending's ability to heal and his seemingly wide knowledge of herbs, they'd been attentive to all he related about the craft. The Sommending's talks about the merits of this plant or that herb helped them better understand herb lore, and how to make different potions.

Later that night at camp.... "...Now that'll make the strongest potion of Rendalim's Elixir that you can find! Mind you, it's quite bitter!" Black Talon was saying.

"Thank you - for all your help, and most importantly, your friendship.

Aside from Ling and a handful of close friends, you are the only one who I can really talk to. Ever since my brother was killed, my father has been pressuring me to be more 'RESPONSIBLE' and take my place as his heir! That's not what I want! I want to learn to heal and learn about the Kai!" replied Marduk.

[Besides, it was my fault that my brother died in the first place - I'm not fit to rule!] thought Marduk.

"I know what you are thinking, and it IS NOT your fault! I know you want to see if you have the metal to become a Kai, but you must talk to your father. Do not let your passions control you! You must learn to look deeper and 'Know thyself', to learn the greater mysteries of the Kai - and to be honest with yourself." countered Black Talon.

"I want to learn about the Kai, and father definitely would not allow that! Especially considering his eldest son had just died! About my brother…I just couldn't.... I was not prepared to talk about it. Still...if I only hadn't mentioned exploring that area..." mumbled a saddened Marduk.

"You must face him; your father deserves to know the truth. And your soul doesn't need that heavy burden." said Ling.

After finishing their conversation, Black Talon readied himself for watch as the others prepared for sleep. Then came the incessant howling ... like clockwork.

As the group prepared to leave, Black Talon said, "We are a little less than 1 days ride to the Pass of Moytura. If we press on, we can make it there in time to sleep in a nice dry bed!"

"We've still got quite a ways to travel, but it'll be nice to be dry for a change. Not to mention that a nice frothy beer sounds pretty good!" relied Marduk with a grin.

As evening approached, the travelling trio finally neared the outskirts of town. With civilization nearby, all were visibly gladdened about the prospects of a little rest and relaxation. However, as the small town loomed ever closer, Marduk noticed a red-splotched bush, with a few broken branches, on the left of the trail. Although the shrubbery had a variety of colours, red was an unusual colour for the time and area. Marduk motioned for them to stop, so they could investigate... it felt "wrong" to him and he needed to find out why. Marduk readied his crossbow and axe in the event of any surprise attack. Even though his sixth sense hadn't warned him of impending danger, Black Talon drew his axe and readied himself as well; Ling stayed back on the trail with the horses. Behind the bush lay 3 corpses and several different tracks; oddly enough, the dead bodies still had all their weapons and travelling equipment. The dead warriors were Slovian mercenaries, according to their clothing and armour. Marduk stood guard, while Black Talon quickly searched the area. Black Talon quickly realized that bandits, or even humans hadn't killed this party: the victims still had all of their weapons and gold! He studied the tracks and determined that several different types of canines and a much larger animal had attacked and killed the party. The horse tracks on the trail indicated that the mercenaries had been travelling on horses, but mysteriously, all 3 horses had escaped.

Black Talon sat there, pondering, [What is going on!? What happened here? I don't know ... Could it be? Yes, it must be!] Black Talon quickly stood up and told Marduk and Ling what he knew.

"The local folklore of this area involves something called 'the Beast'; it has been terrorizing the Pass of Moytura for quite some time," explained Black Talon.

"And let me guess - a reward is offered to whomever kills it, and those 3 are just some of the riff-raff that comes here in search of a nice fat purse." said Marduk.

"Pretty much. What puzzles me is that all the stories I have ever heard about this beast is that it travels alone. Why does it seem like it is travelling with a pack of other canines? I even noticed Akataz tracks alongside a Dhax's tracks!" said Black Talon.

"That is very odd indeed. Maybe some of the locals can explain what's going on. Besides, according to what you're saying, this is not the best place to be," said Marduk.

As they were walking away, Marduk noticed a glint from one of the dead bodies; he bent down to investigate: it was an elaborately fashioned silver brooch, which curiosity made him put it in his pocket.

[How odd for a mercenary to have something like this!] thought Marduk

As Marduk was pondering that thought, Black Talon's Sixth Sense went off! With the quickness and fluidity that the Kai are famed for, Talon unsheathed his axe, spun around and threw it at the reason for alarm: a large black timber wolf was sneaking up on Marduk. The axe whistled inches beside Marduk's head, burying itself between the eyes of a very surprised timber wolf. No sooner that it had hit the deck, 2 more timber wolves jumped out!

Marduk had regained his senses by then and fired his crossbow at the lead wolf. Luckily, the arrow caught the beast in the heart, killing it instantly. Since Talon was now weaponless, Marduk jumped between him and the wolf. He barely had enough time to bring up his axe and block the beast's attack. This time Marduk was ready: he charged forward, wickedly swinging his axe. By the third swing, Marduk now faced a three legged, headless wolf.

"Let's get out of here before more return!" yelled Marduk to Black Talon.

The two warriors rushed out onto the trail just in time to meet Ling, who was rushing towards them. As the party raced to their horses, a semi-faint growling sound could be heard in the distance. Seeing that everyone was okay, all three quickly mounted their horses and galloped on towards town. As they kept going onwards, the growling sound continued to grow...

[Luthor]

If there was one thing Luthor hated, it was rain. He had never been fond of water, for drinking or washing, and had given up both uses years ago. Now, however, it seemed nature was determined to remind him of this hated substance. Outside, he could hear the rumble of the thunder and the pounding of the rain. He could also feel the rain as it seeped in through the roof of his cave; it seemed his home was not quite as sheltered as he once believed.

When the storm first appeared, Luthor tried to pass the time in his usual fashion; drinking until he passed out. When he awoke, Luthor found to his dismay that the storm had not abated. Two massive drinking sessions later, the storm still hadn't played itself out, but Luthor's alcohol supply had. Feeling thoroughly wretched, Luthor had ventured out into the storm in hopes of finding a caravan to pillage. Instead, all he ended up with was the closest thing to a bath that he had had in years. Now, he sat in the driest corner of his cave, shivering without anything to warm him up. He looked down at his ragged clothing and decided he needed a new coat. Unfortunately, finding one would involve going out in the accursed rain, something he was extremely loath to do, and so he just sat where he was, wet and miserable.

Feeling bored, Luthor stared out into the woods. His eyesight was clearer than usual, thanks to his lack of alcohol, so he could just make out the shape of a wolf. He watched it for a few moments as it sniffed the ground and looked all around before realizing that a wolf pelt would make good protection against the rain. He grabbed his axe and was about to venture outside when it occurred to him that the hide of the wolf was too small to fit his massive frame. With a curse about the unfairness of life, Luthor sat down again. A few minutes later, the wolf looked up suddenly and stared out into the forest. Apparently it saw something, for it let out a howl and scampered into the underbrush. Mildly interested, Luthor peered out to see what would happen next.

A few moments later, Luthor's questions were answered when an enormous wolf-like creature loped into view. Luthor stared for some moments, stunned by its size. Slowly a thought took shape in his brain; this creature would make a great coat. Luthor was up in seconds and running toward the beast, his enormous axe poised to deliver a lethal blow. Sensing the lumbering charge, the beast turned to face the charging highwayman. Seeing the deadly axe, the creature leaped away but spun with lightning reflexes and dove for Luthor's throat. Surprised by the speed of the wolf-thing, Luthor barely managed to bring his axe in line with the beast. Massive jaws clamped down on the haft of the axe and Luthor felt the enormous weight of the creature threatening to pull the weapon from his grasp. With a bellow of rage, Luthor yanked the axe high in the air, lifting the beast off the ground. Surprised by the man's strength, the creature released its grip on the axe and the sudden change in weight caused Luthor to overbalance and fall backwards. Instantly the beast was on him, it's huge jaws threatening to tear out his throat even as the wicked claws raked his limbs. With a strength wrought from desperation, the highwayman surged to his feet, hurling the beast away. An instant later, a bestial howl echoed through the woods as the beast landed on a broken branch, driving the splintered wood into its side. Once again demonstrating its remarkable reflexes, the monstrous creature leapt to its feet and fled into the forest. Luthor paused a moment to ponder his newly ripped and bloody clothing, then realized his prey was getting away.

"Get back here you fur-brained son of a storgh!" Luthor bellowed as he charged off after the fleeing creature.

[Star Hunter]

After a night of rest, the team enjoyed a good breakfast before setting out once again for the woods to track the Beast. And what a miserable day to set out on. It was pouring rain. Unfortunately Steel Fox had caught a cold and was not joining the hunt. None of the party wanted Steel Fox to risk getting worse by going out in the pouring rain.

The inn keeper and his wife fell over themselves serving the Kai Lords and Kalotar. There were pancakes, maple syrup, scrambled eggs, sausages, smoked ham, bacon, fresh baked rolls, grape jelly, butter, apple juice, and toast.

Star Hunter didn't stuff himself but he made sure he had a full stomach. He even buttered some rolls, stuffing them with ham, wrapping them in a clean handkerchief, and stuffing them in his backpack.

Kalotar, dressed in his robes of blue, ate very little. It was obvious his mind was elsewhere, and the Kai wondered if the mage ever paused in his concern for their well being.

After washing up after breakfast, they made sure their water skins were full and that they had sufficient supplies for several days journey.

Scarlet Falcon took the lead as he was best at following tracks. Star Hunter was close behind, catching any leads Scarlet Falcon missed since he too had tracking skills. They would need all the tracking skills they had to find the trail in this pouring rain.

Kalotar the Unredeemed was placed in the middle of the group, not only to protect him but to enable him to quickly reach the front or rear of the group upon need.

"There is ill omen in the air, my Kai brethren," stated Kalotar. "I fear we shall soon come face to face with the true threat within these mountains."

Moments later they entered a clearing. Several people were studying the area. Bounty hunters! On the ground lay the bodies of two young men, obviously torn apart by the beast.

"Kai Lords!" One of the bounty hunters cried.

"Back off Kai Lords!" One declared, blocking their view of the victims, sword drawn, "This clue is ours!"

"Clue?" Star Hunter cried in disgust, "Those were people!"

"Not anymore they aren't! So back off."

Scarlet Falcon spat on the ground and turned away in disgust, He had never cared for bounty hunters.

It didn't take the bounty hunters long to check everything out and leave, laughing. But in doing so the area was trampled, clues like tracks messed up. Deliberately.

"They did this deliberately!" Star Hunter cried angrily.

"Aye, Star Hunter," commented the Unredeemed, "Such is their way. Worry not, however. Those of us who are true of heart will certainly triumph over ruffians such as them. They will not hinder our hunt in the slightest."

"Well, do we take the bodies back, bury them or what?" Star Hunter asked.

Suddenly the sound of the Beast howling was heard. Then human screams of terror and pain. That answered the question.

The group hurried towards the cries, causing water and mud to splash on themselves. The screams and howls didn't last long and soon the party was following the tracks again in the hopes of finding who needed help. If they weren't already too late.

Ten minutes later the group entered another clearing. The place was literally painted in blood and body parts. There was not a blade of grass that had not been dyed red with blood. Even the trees and bushes were splattered with blood. Here and there was a torn piece of flesh. Most were unrecognizable. The Beast was a quick worker.

Star Hunter looked down and found a severed head. The head of one of the bounty hunters they had been following. It looked as if it had been ripped off at the throat. His eyes were wide and his mouth open as if the last thing he had done was scream in terror. Star Hunter pointed to the head. It was about the only recognizable body part in the clearing.

"Well, looks like those bounty hunters won't be messing up the trail anymore," commented Star Hunter.

"The fools!" Added Kalotar. "If only they saw us as allies instead of enemies, they might still be alive."

What a waste of life. The two trackers, Scarlet Falcon and Star Hunter began to search beyond the clearing, looking for Beast tracks leading away from the clearing.

It didn't Scarlet Falcon long to find the tracks of the Beast leading away from the clearing of death and for the party to continue on the trail. For a short distance the tracks were highly visible with blood and the occasional piece of human.

Star Hunter kneeled in the grass beside Scarlet Falcon, examining the first clean, clear tracks of the Beast. Star Hunter bent down and placed his hand over the paw print. The paw print was much larger than his hands.

"It's at least the size of an average horse. Maybe larger," Star Hunter commented. The whole party had already surmised that this was probably the case from the two previous sites of slaughter.

As the party continued to follow the tracks, the signs of blood became less and less. Ahead the trees and bushes were wider apart. The party found themselves entering a clearing. Suddenly they heard the sound of something crashing through the forest, heading straight towards them.

The Kai quickly spread out and took up defensive positions, weapons ready. Kalotar held his hand aloft and it began to glow as he mumbled a short incantation. A large shape was coming through the bushes.

[Kalotar]

The Kai and Kalotar tensed as the frenzied shaking of the bushes grew in intensity. Suddenly, the brush parted and a huge form emerged. It was over six feet tall and hugely built, though most of its form was concealed under a thick layer of extremely ragged clothing. Wild black hair covered its head, but despite the bestial appearance, it walked on two legs and clutched an enormous battleaxe in its hands. The man was obviously winded from a long chase, and was equally surprised to see the trio. Scarlet Falcon and Star Hunter kept their grips on their weapons, but let them fall to their sides. Kalotar's hand still stayed aloft, however, crackling with blue electricity.

"Struth!" said the mage, "Is this the Beast?! I wasn't aware it walked upon two legs!"

"Beast?" shouted the newcomer. "I'm no skugging beast, you uptight excuse for a beanpole! I'm Luthor Dragmire and don't you forget it!"

"No, I guess that isn't the Beast," said Star Hunter. His Dragon Heart Bow didn't indicate the guy was evil, so he relaxed a little. The energy surrounding the Unredeemed's hand disappearred as he stepped back cautiously.

"So," he said, "It is another bounty hunter then. Fear us not, stranger. We are here to rid this area of the deadly Beast. As you can see, it has recently claimed lives and is still lurking about."

"Fear you?" said the brigand. "Why in Naar's name would I fear you pitiful heaps of Kraan vomit? And what's this stinking Beast you keep talking about? I've been chasing some Gods-rotted wolf thing all day trying to get a new skugging coat to keep away all this Naar-spawned water from the sky!"

"Chasing the Beast for a fur coat?" responded Kalotar in bewilderment.

"You'd risk your life for such a thing?"

"Hey!" Scarlet Falcon called out. "Look. Tracks." He bent down to touch them lightly. "They're fresh too."

"I think the time is nigh, my lords," observed Kalotar. "Let us proceed with caution."

"Not so fast, you slimy lumps of Doomwolf bait! I saw that Beast thing first, and by the rotten guts of Gnaag, it's mine to kill! I'm coming with you!"

The quartet slowly proceeded on. Scarlet Falcon was in the lead, followed closely by Star Hunter. Luthor barged passed Kalotar, yet the mage was content to guard the group from behind.

Lightning flashed in the sky as the rain continued to fall heavily. In a break between two trees stood a lone wolf. It growled at Scarlet Falcon before turning around and disappearing behind the trees. The tracks of the Beast led up to where the wolf had been.

"It must be lost. Wolves rarely hunt alone." murmurred the red haired Kai Lord.

If the behaviour of the wolf seemed odd, it was nothing to the strange sight that awaited the trackers when they moved through the opening in the trees. Within a clearing stood a ragtag group of assorted dogs and wolves from all over Magnamund. There was at least a score of them, each one loping around slowly and eyeing the new entrants to the area.

"Look!" said a startled Kalotar. "A Vassagonian warhound! What is it doing here?"

"And there's some doomwolves!" Gasped Star Hunter, raising his bow with a magic arrow already nocked.

"By Ishir, a Taintor wolf!" Scarlet Falcon pointed out.

Luthor cared nothing for all the creatures around him. "Get out of here ye scrawny runts!" Luthor bellowed. "Where's my skugging coat?"

"Could it be?" spoke Kalotar, pointing to a beshadowed human in the middle of the clearing. "It's a man. And he's petting what could only be the Beast!"

Having heard this, the mysterious figure moved his attention from the huge animal at his side, so that he was now facing the Kai and their cohorts. He was very tall, with a bestial appearance to him that made him look less than human. His hair was long and bushy, leading down to below his shoulders, where it seemed to be one with the long, braided beard that adorned his cruel face. Below the beard was revealed a large, obsidian amulet that hung from his broad shoulders. In one of his hands was a sinister black leather whip. The other hand was softly stroking the head of the Beast which sat by his side docilely.

"Greetings, fellow hunters," said he, a malevolent smile forming on his lips to reveal a set of sharp, canine teeth. "Worry not; The Beast will not harm you. Not now. Please, come forward."

"Perhaps it is not the Beast we have to worry about then," stated Kalotar as he stepped out from behind the Kai lords.

"What?!" shrieked the man. "A Brotherhood mage! Why was I not shown this?"

He then levelled a vicious kick at a wolf which was close to him. It whimpered before scampering a short distance away.

"And who are you to stand among such creatures unharmed?" asked Star Hunter.

"Who am I?" said the mystery man, a mad glint in his eyes. "Why, I am the howling during a full moon. I am the pack that hunts in the night. All that which is of the hound, from the wildest forest creature to the most domestic of housepets, knows my name and heeds my call, for I am the Houndmaster!"

"And what is it that has brought you here, oh Houndmaster?" questioned Kalotar suspiciously. "What is your purpose? I trust you not, nor your appearance."

"I am here for the Beast, of course!" boasted the Houndmaster. "And found it I have. It now serves me. Your hunt is over. This creature will no longer be causing death in these parts."

"You're nothing but a bounty hunter." said Scarlet Falcon angrily. Bounty hunters were not his favourite people and recent experiences had not changed this.

"Careful, friend Falcon." said Kalotar. "Whatever he is, he claims he can prevent the Beast from it's vicious killing sprees. And, from the way the giant wolf obeys him, I think Moytura may now be safe."

"Safe?" continued the Houndmaster. "I fear I misspoke. I meant to say that my new prize will no longer be causing death here of it's own free will. It will kill when and wherever I command it to. Farewell, hunters. I am off to new conquests."

"We cannot allow you to leave with the Beast, Houndmaster." stated Star Hunter firmly.

"Is that so?" sneered the Houndmaster. "You that are but prey would speak so to me? Again, I bid you farewell. By that I mean bid your farewells to life, for you see, I serve Naar as my hounds serve me. My dark god commands that today the blood of the Kai shall flow! Kill them, my servants! Rend them to pieces!"

With this, the Houndmaster cracked his whip while the amulet upon his chest glowed with an unnatural light. The motley crew of murderous mutts charged in unison towards the Kai, Luthor, and Kalotar the Unredeemed. Star Hunter quickly fired off three magic arrows at two doomwolves. Two arrows struck the lead wolf through the eyes, killing it instantly. The third arrow just barely grazed the second doomwolf. As the wolf leapt at Star Hunter, he dove under it. The doomwolf was so close that it's belly hairs brushed his hat from his head.

Star Hunter rolled to his feet as the doomwolf spun and turned, slipping once in the wet mud. The Dragon Bow flared with magic as it made two more arrows appear in rapid succession. Star Hunter fired both. As the arrows pierced the doomwolf through it's open mouth, the animal's foreclaws struck his left shoulder and rib cage, sending Star Hunter back down onto the ground. Star Hunter gasped at the pain as the doomwolf landed beside him dead.

Star Hunter drew upon the Kai discipline of healing spell to stop the bleeding, but the damage was worse than his ability could handle. Star Hunter struggled to redraw the Dragon Bow, hoping to aid his party. Scarlet Falcon ducked a leap from one of the pack and rolled to one side. As he rose, he drew his hand crossbow and sent a dart whistling after the creature, a Ruellian wardog. The dart bit into one of the dog's haunches. Completely unafraid, Luthor swung his massive axe back and forth before him while advancing on the teeming pack. One doomwolf got too close and had its skull split open with a sickening crump. Luthor heaved his axe from the wreckage of the doomwolf's head, but it was firmly embedded and would not come free. Luthor put his foot on the slain creature and pulled with all his might. The axe suddenly tore free, but knocked Luthor off balance and he staggered back a few steps, tripped over an akataz which was sneaking up on him, causing Luthor to fall to the ground. Instantly the creature was on him, snarling and biting. With a bellow of rage, Luthor surged to his feet and seized the akataz by the scruff of it's neck. With another bellow, he hurled the creature into a nearby tree, snapping it's neck. Glancing about for another opponent, Luthor saw another akataz running past him. With yet another bellow, he turned and gave chase.

Kalotar stepped back from the melee and concentrated a new spell of his upon the amulet that he guessed to be the source of the Houndmaster's power. Though the spell should have stolen the amulet from the evil one's possession, it instead did nothing, leaving the mage baffled by its failure.

Just then, the leathery akataz which had slipped past the Kai and Luthor hurled itself at Kalotar. Unfortunately, The Unredeemed was distracted by his failed spell and was not able to notice the creature in time as its sharp fangs hurtled towards his throat. A split second before its gnashing muzzle could reach Kalotar's neck, a large battle axe swooped down and clove the akataz in two. Luthor Dragmire had saved the wizard from certain death. The brigand then turned to face the huge doomwolf now attacking him, while Kalotar was knocked to the ground by the carcass of the deadly dog. The massive doomwolf bared down on Luthor, but underestimated the highwayman's speed and ferocity. Luthor charged straight for the monstrous spawn, axe flying outward in a deadly arc just as the creature leapt for his throat. The razor-sharp blade neatly severed the doomwolf's forelegs and turned the leaping creature aside. It fell to the ground, bleeding profusely, and did not rise. Then, an eerie howl echoed through the clearing and a Taintor wolf charged Luthor.

Showing no fear, Luthor reached into a pocket and removed a flask, then took a huge swig of the contents. Dropping the flask to the ground, he plucked a torch from his sleeve. Luthor growled and the torch flared into life. The wolf was almost upon him when Luthor made his move, spitting the contents of the flask through the flaming torch. The potent alcohol ignited and flew onward into the snarling visage of the Taintor wolf, setting it's face on fire. The creature howled again, in pain this time, and fled the clearing. Luthor watched it go, laughing. Scarlet Falcon hadn't had time to reload his bow, so he had drawn a small throwing knife. Picking his moment carefully, he sent the knife spinning forward at a new attacker, a Vassagonian warhound. The dog dodged quickly so that the blade merely scored it's flank. Cursing, Scarlet Falcon drew another knife and held it ready.

Suddenly, the pack began to break off and run in separate directions into the woods. As the party regained their composure, they noticed the Houndmaster was long gone. With him had gone the Beast. Star Hunter lowered his bow. The bow vanished, reverting back to its ring form. Star Hunter clutched his left rib cage and slowly kneeled. He gritted his teeth at the pain and thought of how he must remain conscious. Kalotar the Unredeemed managed to push off the dead akataz that was on top of him. He slowly came to his feet.

"I know not why my spell failed," the mage wondered aloud. "Only a powerful artifact would deny it, and I doubt his amulet is such. However, the spell could have failed as a safeguard to protect me. I fear that man is cursed. Nonetheless, he has revealed himself as an agent of Naar. Therefore, we must stop him."

Star Hunter agreed but doubted he could pursue the creature right away. He made another use of his healing ability.

"Ah," he thought. "That feels better."

Kalotar turned to face Luthor. "Brute, you have saved my life. I feel I owe it to you to let you know that you will no longer be safe in these woods alone now that the Houndmaster considers you an enemy. Using his formidable powers, he can easily track you down and attempt to slay you again. I would ask that you stay with us until our mutual foe is dealt with. There is room for you to dwell with me at the inn of Moytura should you heed my advice, though Ishir save me for offering it."

"All I want is a new skugging coat!" replied Luthor. "I want that blabbering heap of wolf dung to come after me, so long as he brings that walking fur coat with him!"

"Again you risk your life for a fur coat." said The Unredeemed. "Very well, you belligerent beserker. Contemplate this: That Houndmaster wants us dead more than you. He only attacked our group because he wanted to slay the Kai Lords. He will in all probability try to slay us again before even pondering coming after you. When he does this, I will use the full force of my magic to destroy the Beast which he now controls. Now, will you return with us to Moytura to await such an attack, or would you rather be off skulking in the woods somewhere when the time comes for me to blast your precious fur coat to smoldering smithereens?"

Luthor went to respond, but then paused. A vision came to him of himself wearing a magnificent fur coat of Beast hide. Then another vision with him wearing the same fur coat, only with burn marks and giant holes in it. It was then the answer came to him.

"Well?" asked Kalotar. "Do you accept my offer now?"

Luthor Dragmire reluctantly nodded his head in the affirmative.

Scarlet Falcon sniffed the air. "We'd better head back. I think we're in for a rough night."

As the four returned to town, the thunderclouds exploded in fury, releasing yet another heavy torrent upon the Moytura Pass. It seemed the rain in this region would never cease.

Post by Daniel Howes, The Houndmaster XII, "Fire, fur and fellowship"

[Scarlet Falcon], [Marduk]

Scarlet Falcon couldn't sleep that night. The party was swelling and his authority was diminishing. He needed some time on his own to sort himself out. As a matter of course, he readied all of his weaponry and mindful of his sleeping companions, sneaked outside.

It was a quiet evening, the type that always following harsh rainfall. It was as if the forest around him was relaxing in the current tranquillity, just as he was. Scarlet Falcon knew that he wouldn't have a lot of time on his own. He would soon be missed or, worse, the attacks would start again. The Houndmaster was yet another twist in what had turned out to be a most miserable tale. Things had started off with a simple hunt for a solitary creature. Now it was a full-blown war against a mage with a huge canine army. The life of a Kai lord was varied if nothing else!

[And I gave up two weeks of guard duty for this (!)]

Scarlet Falcon reached over his shoulder and twanged his bowstring. He had not been able to use his weapon of choice much due to the weather, but its very presence had been a constant source of comfort. On impulse, he pulled it from his shoulder and notched an arrow. Smiling at how stupid he must look, he levelled the weapon at the trees around him. For a few seconds he was back in the Kai monastery, playing around at what he did best: Archery. All of the trials of the last few days went away and he was at peace.

For a while…..

Scarlet Falcon's dreaming almost cost him his life as a huge wolf leaped over the nearby bushes at him. He tried to defend himself, and his bow bore the brunt of the attack: the wolf tore straight through the bow's wood and string, leaving Scarlet Falcon's weapon in tatters in the mud. The Kai lord scrambled backwards, rummaging under his cloak for something to defend himself with. His small crossbow was unloaded and therefore useless.

Dragging his mace from under his body, Scarlet Falcon struggled to his feet, slowly backing away from the prowling wolf. Partly dazed and in shock from the surprising attack, he didn't think to shout for help. He continued to back away until he felt the wall of the inn behind him. Now the wolf came forward, only this time Scarlet Falcon noticed that the Taintor Wolf he now faced was being supported by two newcomers: two Timber Wolves had just stepped out of the brush. Scarlet Falcon held his mace his both hands a tried to remember his melee lessons.

Just as the Taintor Wolf leaped at his throat, a huge creature emerged from the woods along with half a dozen various wolves. It was then that Scarlet Falcon realized that he was dead; he had no chance to defeat his attackers, especially now that the Beast joined them. Now that his immediate shock had worn off, he yelled for help, as a last desperate attempt for survival.

From out of nowhere, three riders emerged for the trail in time to hear the cry for help and to witness a very unusual scene. A lone figure was bravely defending himself from three different wolves, while many others, including a much larger creature, seemingly watched the battle.

Immediately the three riders swooped down upon the large pack of canines. Marduk swiftly raised and fired his crossbow at the Taintor Wolf attacking the lone figure, seriously wounding it, but not killing it. But it was enough: as luck would have it, the wounded Taintor Wolf's leap was thrown off and wound up crashing into one of the other wolves. This bought the young warrior enough time to deal with the third wolf, improving the battle's odds.

****

Staggering backwards, Scarlet Falcon heaved a huge sigh of relief. The mysterious interjection had given him enough time to defend himself. He barely had time to shout his thanks to the three figures on horseback before a harsh growl brought him back to the battle.

****

As Black Talon rushed forward to assist Scarlet Falcon, he was immediately beset by several hunting dogs and a war hound, and was thrown from his horse. Scrambling up, he drew a dagger from beneath his Kai breeches; he quickly tossed it at the dogs, if nothing more than a diversion in which to settle himself. Now his axe spun in a dizzying arc from one hound to another.

Ling's horse, frightened by the wolves, reared back and nearly threw him off the saddle. Ling took this opportunity to leap from the saddle in order to confront these new foes. Drawing his steel, he attacked ...

****

Marduk and leapt from his saddle to fight the main pack of canines, and eliminate the main threat: the Beast. At the same time, his now reloaded crossbow fell to the ground as his horse scampered away. [What manner of creature is this Beast, that it can command an army of canines!!??] thought Marduk as he cast Power Word at the pack's centre, near the Beast. Its effects at close range were quite rewarding for the young Vakeros. He smiled in satisfaction, until he noticed that the Beast, unlike most of its brethren, was barely hurt. The other wolves and hounds divided their attention to the nearest attacker...efficiently splitting up into groups, as if commanded by a general watching from a nearby hill. As the Beast leapt towards the Vakeros, Marduk released another spell: Invisible Fist. The spell's effects smashed into the Beast, knocking it backwards. Before an eye was blinked, it was back up and leaping at Marduk's throat. Started by the creature's speed and evident power, Marduk realized that he would be quickly out classed and out maneuverered if he didn't think of something to even up the odds a little. Then opportunity presented itself with the Beast's next attack; Marduk was able to land a serious blow to its left forearm, effectually making it go limp. But it cost Marduk: at the same moment, the Beast had managed to pierce his defences and bit deeply into Marduk's left thigh. Slamming his other fist into the snout was the only thing that saved Marduk's leg from being bitten in two. Even though both fighters were quite bloodied and wounded by now, Marduk's counter measures and deft axe strokes were not enough to keep the Beast at bay. It was slowly winning. Then it happened... The Beast pounced upon its prey...

****

Scarlet Falcon was having no better a time. He had been joined by one of his rescuers; now they were side to side, fending off attackers. Scarlet Falcon's close range fighting style had no finesse, just brute force and determination. Swinging his mace in wide arcs, he was managing to keep the creatures back, while Black Talon finished them off. Sadly, this proved not to be enough; out of the darkness, more of the canines kept arriving. Scarlet Falcon's prior feeling of dread came creeping back. The only way now was to unite with the other two fighters and hold the horde off together. Hopefully help would soon arrive, but they'd have to survive until then, and uniting was their only hope. Shouting to his comrade, Scarlet Falcon told him his plan; the two warriors then began forcing their way forward. With a final burst, they broke through the cordon and Scarlet Falcon found himself beside another one of the men, a Vakeros. In the heat of battle, Scarlet Falcon glanced across the battlefield. He saw a huge warrior pinned under a similar sized beast: The Beast. During a brief lull in the battle, Scarlet Falcon noticed a crossbow lying unattended in the mud. Seeing the Beast getting the better of its fight, Scarlet Falcon threw caution to the wind and dived at the crossbow...it was already loaded. Scarlet Falcon rolled to his side and took a snapshot… It hit the Beast plum in rump.

****

Being crushed beneath the Beast's great bulk was quickly taking its toll on Marduk. [I've got to think of something fast! If I could just cast one more spell...] Suddenly the Beast reared up... enough to give Marduk room and air enough to grasp the Beast's furry mane and cast Energy Grasp. [Oh sh...!] thought Marduk, as the Beast quickly turned into a large fireball!

Marduk was not seriously burned, because the Beast immediately leapt off Marduk and started rolling around on the ground...howling loudly in pain. Quickly seizing the opportunity, Marduk drew back his axe ... [Don't fail me this time Kohr-vak, my old friend!] ... and dealt a devastating blow to the Beast, cutting it's large head off. [Thanks the gods! Thank you Ishir!]

Then something strange happened. As soon as the Beast died, all the other canines that were still alive immediately broke off their attacks, emitted a loud howling sound, and scampered off into the forest.

The weary survivors quickly surveyed the battle scene: what had seemed like hours of battle and hundreds slain, was only a matter of minutes and a about a dozen canine corpses. Still vigilant and wary of another attack, the four warriors began to assess the damage and their wounds, while introducing themselves.

Post by Errin Famiglia, The Houndmaster XIII, "Luthor vs. Kalotar"

[Luthor], [Kalotar]

A tremendous belch echoed through the taproom. The sound quickly vanished, swallowed by a hearty cheer as the bounty hunter sitting across the table from Luthor toppled out of his chair. The highwayman was fast becoming a legend among the tough mercenaries hunting the Beast.

"Alright you scrawny milksops, who's gonna take his place now?" Much shuffling greeted this question; the man now lying on the floor was Luthor's third opponent and the huge brigand showed no signs of flagging. Eventually, another man stepped forward and sat at the table. "More!" Luthor roared in the general direction of the bar. A very nervous-looking barkeeper emerged.

"I'm s-sorry sir, but you've exceeded your tab," the man stuttered.

"What're you talking about, you pitiful pile of Kraan bait?"

"Y-your companion s-set a tab and y-you've exceeded it," the small man explained, growing paler by the moment. Some of the mercenaries began to chuckle.

Face darkening with rage, Luthor leapt to his feet, avoiding the sprawled form of his erstwhile opponent with uncanny ease. "I'll teach that stuck-up beanpole to cut me off!" He roared, charging for the stairs, leaving behind a crowd of laughing mercenaries and one very relieved barkeeper.

****

Kalotar the Unredeemed sat brooding in his room; Never before had he faced such a dire dilemma. Of the Houndmaster, a cruel and terrible foe he had met earlier that day, he was not focussed. True, the fiend had revealed himself to be the mysterious figure of Kalotar's vision, a vision which had brought the Brotherhood mage to Moytura. Still, worried not about the fearsome master of hounds was The Unredeemed.

The Kai lords themselves were not on his mind either, a rare occasion. It was they in their hunt for the Beast which had drawn him into the treacherous Moytura Pass. Though he was greatly concerned for their well-being, with one of them wounded by the Houndmaster's pack, another greatly ill due to the unwholesome weather of the Pass, they did not at this very moment occupy the concentration of the tall, stooped wizard. No, only one thing, one person, one adversary dominated the will and focus of Kalotar the Unredeemed. Luthor Dragmire. Fate can be cruel. Of this, he who is Unredeemed knows well. And yet, until now, Kalotar did not know how cruel it could be. He cursed Fate for having brought the likes of the wildman across his path. He cursed himself for foolishly offering the barbarian sanctuary at the inn of Moytura. But most of all, he cursed Luthor. Opposites, in some cases, repel. This would be an understatement in the case of Kalotar versus Luthor. The Unredeemed despised the brigand as much as Luthor enjoyed shouting obscenities at the mage. This the foul-mouthed giant had done all the way back on the return trek to town earlier, interrupted only by periods in which the bandit silently eyed each and every member of the party in suspicion that they coveted the Beast and its great coat. Things had only gotten worse when they had arrived in town. Luthor flung obscenities at the townspeople, at the inn he was to stay, at the room he was to share with Kalotar. Nothing was exempt from the man's verbal lashings, if man he was (and Kalotar had his suspicions about that).

Finally, the colourful rantings came to a stop when Luthor had grown dry in the throat from their constant use. It was then that he demanded that the Unredeemed set him up a bar tab at the inn's tavern. The mage had quickly agreed to this; Anything to be spared a moment or two free from the thoroughly rude ruffian. That had been an hour ago, an hour Kalotar had spent trying to think of a way to cut Luthor loose from himself and the Kai lords. Simply telling him to leave would not suffice. It was Kalotar's words which had convinced the madman to stick close with the group. He would not let them out of his sight, not as long as his precious fur coat walked on four feet and could be destroyed by any one of them. Magic seemed to be a lost cause also; In desperation, Kalotar had indeed tried to Mind Charm the highwayman to go away, only to discover that there was no mind to be charmed. Lightning Hand may have been the better choice, but then again, it may have only annoyed he dubious Dragmire. Besides, the brute had saved Kalotar's life, so the mage was loathe to use anything too drastic against the menace. Regardless, the Unredeemed was certain that there would be some way to keep the warrior in line until the Houndmaster had been dealt with. Perhaps, Luthor could even be of some use in defeating the supernatural commander of canines...

"Ah, the Houndmaster." thought Kalotar. "It is he who deserves my attention now; I can only waste so much time contemplating that fool of a room mate. Now to seek out the true nemesis in these parts." With this, the Unredeemed drew forth his crystal ball and began murmuring the incantation which would induce it's power. As his Scry spell took effect, the image of the surrounding wilderness apearred in the small orb of crystal. Using his mystical sight, Kalotar began scanning the hills for the whereabouts of the malevolent master of hounds.

Suddenly, the door burst open, interrupting the wizard's concentration and breaking the spell's searchings. The huge and unkempt form of Luthor Dragmire filled the doorway.

"What is it, you liquor-loving lowlife? Why are you back so soon, brute?" asked The Unredeemed angrily.

"You maggoty heap of Kraan vomit! By Vashna's soiled undergarments I should remove your slimy head from your shoulders you skugg! Extend my tab now or by the tongue of Naar's mother in law I'll tear you to ribbons!

"Why, you lout of a lush! You vulgar villain! How dare you interrupt my magical workings over something so trivial. What care I about your uncouth drinking habits? So, quaffing like a Xargath, you've exceeded the limit I set for you and now expect me to raise it further? Not likely, you wretched shirkadag!"

"Last chance doomwolf bait," Luthor stated dangerously. Setting down his axe, Luthor advanced on the mage with his arms extended as if to tear the man appart with his bare hands.

"Stay back, you stuperous funger! You'll not drink another drop tonight, and nothing you do to me will change that!"

Luthor lunged at Kalotar, but the mage quickly stepped backward. The thought that he could use this provocation to blast the brigand entered his mind and stuck. With difficulty he shrugged it away; Luthor was angry, but didn't seem murderously so. He was quick, however, and Kalotar's retreat was only partially effective as the highwayman advanced another step and grabbed for the mage. The Unredeemed twisted away, but not fast enough and Luthor caught hold of his robe. Kalotar tried to pull away, but Luthor's grip was like steel and the robe tore under the pressure.

"Belligerent bully! Look what you've done now. Why, I'd use the Hand of Redemption on you this very instance, only there's nothing about you which is redeemable! Oh, to see such a disgrace as my fine Brotherhood robe disfigured by a crass cad such as you. Watch, foul fool, as I use a simple spell to deal with a seam caused by a simpleton."

Kalotar spoke a brief incantation then ran his hand over the tear. Where there had once been a large rend was now completely undamaged cloth, the sleeve magically repaired. Luthor stared at the repaired cloth, hardly believing his eyes. In his experience, when something ripped you either put up with it or got a new one. A few seconds later it occurred to him that some people did in fact know how to repair clothes. A smile spread across his face as he realized that he had just learned the secret of repairing clothes. The smile faded in short order as a nagging thought entered his brain. Furrowing his brow, he tried to grab a hold of the thought and some moments later he was successful. An even bigger smile lit up his face.

"So, " said the wizard emphatically, "that fur coat is once again on your mind, eh, ogre? You're thinking my magic may be useful to you after all. Certainly, the Beast will come to some harm in any attempt to procure its coat. And I suppose you're now thinking I will somehow repair that damage and create an entirely unmarred coat for you. Ha! To think all along a minor Mend spell was all I've needed to keep you in line!"

Before Kalotar the Unredeemed could gloat for even a second, his moment of glory was interrupted by a commotion outside. A mixed cacophony of howlings, growlings, and barks could be heard in the inn's general vicinity. The mage quickly pulled back the curtains of the room's only window and was shocked by what he saw outside. The Houndmaster's pack had returned! Overlooking the rear of the inn (for that was where the window faced), Kalotar watched in horror as a motley mix of wolves and dogs bared down on the backdoor of the inn.

"The Kai lords!" gasped the Unredeemed. "They must be the target! Star Hunter and Steel Fox are in grave peril if we don't stop the hounds! Come, brute; You may be of some use finally." Before Luthor could even get out a single curse word in response, he found himself whisked away with the Brotherhood mage to the inn's rear entrance. Kalotar had used his magic to teleport the two outside and now Luthor found himself facing the charging pack, only now he was bare handed, his great axe still in the room they had abruptly left.

Bellowing a curse at the mage for forgetting his axe, Luthor waded into the pack, punching left and right with his huge fists. One war dog leapt at him, but Luthor merely caught the maddened creature in mid-flight and hurled it passed a startled Kalotar into the wall of the inn. Another dog bit him from behind, but Luthor just roared another curse and shattered its skull with his fists. Kalotar quickly realized the inn was being attacked on all sides; The power of the Houndmaster, though limited, was used in such a manner that he was as deadly as a master of greater magicks. Even everyday house pets from within Moytura had joined the attacking throng. Over a dozen tiny dogs charged Luthor simultaneously.

"Get out of here you mangy rat-dog things!" Completely ignoring the bellow, the ensorcelled dogs leapt onto the brigand. Though he managed to swat two away, the move left him off balance and he toppled to the ground under the weight of the others amid a storm of tiny bites.

With Luthor downed, it was only seconds before the pack would reach Kalotar. The Unredeemed thrust both arms into the air and recited an incantation. From his hands came a sticky netting which covered a dozen or so hounds, the lot trapped together yelping and snapping within the web. Though plenty more still charged forth, the first wave of them had been subdued, that is, all except one Doomwolf which had sped by the net and now hurled itself into the air towards Kalotar. This time, however, the mage was ready; He disappeared a split second before the Doomwolf could reach him. Re-appearing a few feet to the left, Kalotar watched as the huge wolf hurtled into the rear all of the inn, knocking itself unconscious.

The initial surprise over, Luthor roared a battlecry and surged to his feet, plucking dogs from his body and crushing them in his hands. Some were shaken loose by his movements and fell to the ground where they snarled and bit at his feet. Suddenly it occurred to Luthor that he still had one weapon and he quickly reached up his sleeve and pulled out his torch. "Time to roast some flea-bitten curs!" He roared and the torch immediately flared into life. With the ease brought about by long practice, Luthor yanked a flask from a pocket and plucked out the stopper with his teeth. Taking an enormous swig, he spat the contents straight through the flames, twisting his head and the torch as he did so, spraying a wide arc of burning liquid and igniting many canines. With a laugh, drained the rest of the flask then roasted another group of attacking dogs.

The Unredeemed prepared for the next wave of murderous canines. More drastic measures would be necessary if Kalotar was to defend against this second batch. Blue energy erupted around his fingertips as the wizard surveyed the approaching horde to suss out the best spot for a lightning bolt to hit. The air suddenly erupted with the immense death howl of a creature which could only be the Beast. Abruptly, the deadly pack halted their assault, turning to escape back into the woods.

Luthor moved to pursue, and indeed chopped down two more wolves, then the likely source of the death howl sunk in and he stopped abruptly. Spinning on his heels, the brigand ran for the front of the inn.

"I'll not let you out of my sight for one moment, you destructive dunderpate!" said Kalotar as he rushed after Luthor. When the two of them reached the front of the inn, they both stopped dead in their tracks from the astonishing sight that confronted them: Around the corpse of a mangled and charred Beast stood Scarlet Falcon exchanging words with a group of three strangers.

"A Vakeros?!" said a stunned Kalotar "And another Kai lord? I know not where they came from, but they seemed to have slain the Beast!"

At first, Luthor didn't even register the newcomers, his attention solely focussed on charred and mangled corpse of the Beast; even he could see that the pelt was ruined beyond repair. Lifting his eyes from the corpse, the highwayman noticed the quartet standing around the grisly remains. A few seconds later, he realized they were the ones who had destroyed his new coat. "You skugging heaps of mangled Vordak waste!" He bellowed, charging toward the group. "I'll teach you to mangle my skugging coat!"

As Luthor was halfway to his target, a shimmering stream of prismatic light began to flow within the air before him. The brigand couldn't help but stare into the kaleidoscopic pattern; Before he knew it, he was simply standing there, hypnotically enthralled by the light, forgetting about the slain Beast, forgetting about anything except the beautiful shimmering illumination. Falcon and the three had also looked into the light, and were now equally awed by it's beauty. Only Kalotar the Unredeemed had his wits about him, for he was the one which the Kaleidoscope had issued from. Quickly, the stooped mage shook Scarlet Falcon free of the spell.

"Go," said Kalotar, "Take the others and check on your fellow Kai lords. I will stay here and deal with this sorry excuse for a Cave Leekhon." The Kai lord quickly roused Marduk, Black Talon, and Ling. There was a quick interchange with Kalotar, then the quartet rushed into the inn to deal with any lingering menace. When they were safely away, Kalotar dispelled the hypnotic pattern which still hung in the air.

A moment after the pattern faded, the memory slipped from his mind. He jerked free of his stupor and continued his charge. It was only when he reached that carcass that he noticed his intended victims had vanished. Lurching to a halt, he spun around with a puzzled expression on his face. Luthor's eyes then fell on the only remaining person in sight. Kalotar. "Alright you uptight beanpole! What did you do to those misbegotten spawns of a storgh that ruined my coat! You better fix it or by the bowels of Naar you'll regret it!"

"Bellow and moan all you like, berserker," stated the Unredeemed. "It won't get your precious coat back. Look, the Beast is beyond any repair; Killing this entire town won't bring it back to life. And not even my magic can fix it's fur now. However, I will take pity on you, as I know your black heart was set on having a fine new coat. Care for you I may not, but I can't help but feel sorry for a child robbed of a shiny new toy. If you'll calm down, I have a proposition for you."

Luthor opened his mouth to respond and Kalotar could almost hear the approaching obscenities, but to his surprise Luthor closed his mouth again.

"Obviously, a coat which could fit your bulk could only normally come from a creature the size of the Beast. But the Beast is destroyed, and there is said to be only one of it's kind. I can still get you your coat, however. Perhaps one slain wolf would not be enough to make a coat which would fit your massive frame. But how about several, maybe even dozens? Surely, we will have to slay that many along the course of defeating this sinister Houndmaster. Using my magic, I can mend their numerous hides together to make a coat fit for a king. A king of fools, that is."

Luthor was so engrossed in considering the idea that he completely missed the insult. It would have been foolish to expect a quick response, but Luthor took even longer to consider the idea than Kalotar expected. Finally, he answered. "Make the skugging coat," he said simply.

"And what do I get in return? More abuse? No, to get such a coat is going to cost you. If you want your coat, you will have to do two things. One, accompany us in our battle against the Houndmaster. Two, deliver the Houndmaster's amulet unto me! I figure you could rend it from his being in one mighty pull. Do this, and I will make you your coat with my magic. The amulet for the coat; I will make no other bargain."

Once again Luthor lapsed into silence, considering the words. Minutes ticked by and Kalotar started to get impatient. Finally the brigand opened his mouth, "Bah! I'll get your…" he broke off, considering his parched throat. Kalotar's impatience returned as Luthor stayed silent. "I'll get your skugging amulet, but you get me that new coat and give me more skugging cash for ale or by the guts of Vashna I'll use you to make my coat!"

"Oh, very well! The things which are priorities to you truly baffle me, you pea-brained ponce. But drink your fill tonight you will, for tomorrow we seek out the Houndmaster. Come! To the tavern! I myself could use a drink after tonight's exertions."

Luthor followed the mage toward the tavern, thinking how clever he'd been to get a new coat and more beer out of the mage. "Dumb wizard," he laughed to himself.

Post by Cool Cat, The Houndmaster XIV, "The Inn"

[Steel Fox], [Star Hunter]

Moytura would have been a really lovely little village hadd it not have been for its bad weather. Since the Kai Lords arrived now two weeks ago, they have been able to count the hours it did not rain on the fingers of their two hands.

Steel Fox knew better than his fellow lords that bad weather could hurt even more than a well aimed arrow. After all it was fever that had forced him to bed for more than three days now...

[Well if had known I would at least have taken some books from the library...]

The young Kai Lord was sitting near the fireplace in the common room of the inn. He was mostly alone for all the hunters and able men were hunting the Beast. He felt somehow spoiled from the fun of his first real adventure by an ill timed bronchitis.

At last he would have some company now. Star Hunter returned with the others last night. He had been badly injured by a doomwolf and was now resting in their room on the first floor.

Steel Fox stretched a bit then walked to the window. The windows was dark and muddy. It seemed that the inn's owner did not care much about the neatness of his windows. It didn't help that it was night time either.

[Sure with all the rain that's falling here it would be wasted time. However such dirt would infuriate Mother]

As he looked through the dark window Steel Fox saw the rain had stopped. Knowing it wouldn't last he took his cloak, walked to the side door, and went out into the side alley.

Star Hunter, bored and cold, had decided to join Steel Fox in the common room. He had pulled on his cloak against the chill. He reached it in time to see Steel Fox exiting the inn by the side entrance. Was Steel Fox crazy? He had been ill and with the dampness out there he was just asking to get more ill by going outside. Star Hunter sighed. He headed after his fellow Kai Lord. He couldn't let him go out alone with the Houndmaster out there. Good thing there was a moon shining out there.

Steel Fox quickly reached the main street and started walking away from the inn, never realizing that other Kai Lords were approaching the front of the inn or that he was being followed.

*****

Something in the dark moved. A pack of canine creatures moved toward a dark shape. The man was patting the head of some rather big doomwolf. The man then turned to the assembled canines.

"My children go to the human settlement and bring my swift justice with you. Kill all those that dare oppose you and be the messenger of my wrath!"

As the Houndmaster finished his sentence the pack moved and took the direction of the town.

*****

The day was gray. Should he not have seen the time at the inn's clock he wouldn't have known if it was the morning or the sunset so dark was the sky. Steel Fox walked through the little town. It seemed that the inhabitants simply accepted the bad weather as something to live with and adapted to it. The market were he strolled through now was protected from the rain by a tensed oilcloth and the vendors sold their wares with the same shout you could hear all over the Sommerlund. Steel Fox bought a apple and continued his walk through the town. As he reached the limits of the town he saw some fresh prints in the mud. Canine. Numerous.

[Oh great Ishir ! A pack ! The town is ambushed ! I must ...]

And then the pack attacked....

Suddenly two arrows whizzed by Steel Fox's head to strike the lead wolf and take it down. A quick glance reassured Steel Fox that it was his fellow Kai Lord Star Hunter. But Star Hunter looked pale and in pain as he drew back his bow for another shot.

Star Hunter gritted his teeth at the pain and continued to fire but there were five of them and he couldn't get them all. Steel Fox would have to defend himself.

Steel Fox readied his broadsword. It had been days since the last time he trained with it but its reassuring weight and coldness was back in his hands now. The next attack came from a young wild hound. It's rabid look and it's drooling fangs were threatening, but Steel Fox's quick thrust hurt him enough to make him flee.

Then immediately another canine was on him. As he retreated he saw that Star Hunter was really looking bad and an open confrontation would only weaken him further. They retreated back to the inn carefully guarding each other's back. As they joined and retreated towards the inn the two Kai Lords saw that the whole town was under attack. Alone they would not be able to win this fight. Maybe at the inn they could rally some of the drunkards that poses themselves as hunters and use the building as a mean of defence against the invasion.

[Well let's hope that those drunkards are more skilled as fighters than as drunkards ...]

Star Hunter looked more and more paler as they moved towards the inn. Each arrow fired taxed him greatly. Steel Fox broadsword chopped through flesh and fur, mostly injuring the beasts. At last they pushed the door of the inn's common room.

"We must do something," yelled Steel Fox as they entered.

The inn's owner was hidden behind the bar. Some of the "hunters" were staring with a less than sober look at the two Kai Lords.

"Get the tables! Move them at the door and windows! Quick!" Shouted Steel Fox in his best commanding tone. As the customers failed to react, he began himself. Grabbing the nearest table he moved it in front of the door just as something hurled violently at the door. The next moment a window exploded in sharp, muddy, glass fragments as a rather large doomwolf jumped in. The assault had begun anew.

The waitress screamed, throwing her tray of drinks into the air as she fled towards the kitchen to hide. One drunk continued to snore at his table. His two buddies stumbled to their feet, trying to draw their swords.

Star Hunter fired at the Doomwolf. It dodged the arrow. Star Hunter was sweating badly at the strain of firing his bow but he doubted he could lift his sword with the injury to his ribs.

The doomwolf ignored the two Kai Lords and sprang at the two drunks fumbling for their swords. Before either Kai Lord could render assistance, another doomwolf sprang into the inn and attacked them. The assault on the door stopped.

Vaguely Star Hunter heard the two men scream as the doomwolf tore into them. He fired a shot at the new doomwolf and this time managed to strike it. But the shot went into the wolf's shoulder, not the head. It yelped and sprang at Steel Fox who stepped between the wolf and Star Hunter.

Steel Fox fell under the weight of the creature. The beast growled and tried to rip the Kai Lord throat open. Rendered breathless after being hit in the chest Steel Fox barely dodged the doomwolf's fangs.

[Star Hunter didn't fire. Weakened as he was, he wasn't sure he wouldn't hit Steel Fox in spite of the Doomwolf.]

*****

[Oh my ! His breath will kill me before it's claws! Time to see if our little wrestling contest back at the monastery were worth something...]

Star Hunter took the opportunity to use his discipline of healing. The pain receded a little. He again pulled his bow, hoping for an opportunity to shot as he targeted the Doomwolf on Steel Fox.

Steel Fox banded his arms and rolled from one side to he other, trying to dodge the beast's attacks. It worked... almost. One time the doomwolf did bite at him and pain bursts in Steel Fox's left arm. However, the next moment he had enough momentum to thrown the beast aside.

It was the moment Star Hunter had been waiting for. He fired his bow. An arrow slammed into the beast's left shoulder as it scrambled to its feet.

Grabbing his sword in his right hand, Steel Fox rolled aside and crouched. The beast was back on her feet and begun her assault anew but this time Steel Fox was ready. As the doomwolf charged, the Kai Lord thrusted his sword right in the beast's throat. The creature died a few seconds later.

Steel Fox was breathing heavily. The doomwolf's attack left him with an injured arm and he had no time now to heal it. Looking around he saw that one of the drunkards was lying on the floor bleeding heavily and the other had a nasty gash across the throat. If the one bleeding wasn't already dead, he won't live for much longer without some aid. The other doomwolf was now attacking the remaining drunkard. Steel Fox moved towards the bar. The innkeeper and the waitress would need his sword arm very soon...

Star Hunter fired two shots at the second Doomwolf. It screamed in pain as one arrow pierced the back of it's neck and the second the top of it's head. It turned to glare at Star Hunter then collapsed. Dead.

*****

The two Kai lords looked around them. Blood, gore and corpses were littering the floor. Two of the drunkards were dead and the third was badly injured, possibly alive. The innkeeper and the waitress were the lucky ones for they didn't even have a scratch.

As they carefully approached the broken window the two Kai lords saw something strange. One second the canine outside were restlessly attacking the people of Moytura and the next they simply dispersed.

"What ... What's happening? Why are they retreating? They were winning here ..."

"Maybe the Houndmaster has been killed ... Don't Panic Steel Fox, we'll know soon enough."

Star Hunter checked the three men that had been drinking in the inn. All three were dead. He looked up at Steel Fox who had an inquiring look. He shook his head.

Star Hunter pulled out a chair. "Now let's rest a bit. We're both wounded now and you've been ill."

Just as they both sat down Scarlet Falcon returned to inn with Marduk, Black Talon and Ling to discover the two Kai Lords and the carnage.

Scarlet Falcon stated, "Well. Seems you two had a fight all your own. You'll be happy to know that the beast is dead."

Both Kai Lords nodded too tired from their recent battles and injuries to much care.

[Kalotar]

Hastily, Kalotar the Unredeemed scuttled back into his room within the recently embattled inn of Moytura. Time was precious; It would only be so long before the drunken personage of Luthor Dragmire would return, and then all hope of getting some decent spellcasting done would be dashed to bits. With the door firmly shut, Kalotar withdrew the small orb of crystal he kept within a secret pocket inside his Brotherhood robe. His gaze focussed upon its centre as he repeated the incantation which triggered the spell. For a

second, the crystal ball remained blank, but then...

...his vision raced through the hills of Moytura. All around was wilderness, the town left far behind. By moonlight he searched through the trees and on the ground, desperate for any hint as to the Houndmaster's whereabouts. Occasionally, he would spot a wolf or two, but none that travelled with a mongrel pack.

As time passed, The Unredeemed knew that he was doomed to fail if he did not think quick. The mountains of the Moytura Pass were many, and it was only a matter of time until his much despised (and mutually appreciative) roommate would return from the bar below to belligerently badger the Brotherhood mage before blatantly blacking out to bed.

There could only be one option: Though difficult, Kalotar could attempt to combine the magicks of another spell with his Scry spell in order to enhance his mystical sight. Through much concentration, he was able to invoke the spell known as 'Sense Evil' while still maintaining his scrying search. Had he attempted a more complicated spell, such a feat could not have been accomplished. As it were, the spell to sense evil was very rudimentary, one of the more simple applications of Left Handed Magic.

Nothing remarkable happened. Kalotar continued his search unabated. Perhaps he could not pinpoint the Houndmaster's malevolence, but the spell could still serve as a compass needle to the lodestone that was the cursed power of the mysterious master of canines.

In time, success. A brush past a faint sinister aura... an increased number of wolves spotted... a warning of great evil through a cluster of large trees... finally, a cave radiating unearthly foulness. Surely, Kalotar had found the den of the Houndmaster. All about the cave's mouth was a myriad of creatures, all members of the hound family from all over Magnamund.

With no time to lose, the mage did not linger. He slowly retraced his scry-sight away from the cave and back to where he knew his actual self to be. As soon as he was certain of the location of the cave in relation to the town, he cancelled his Scry spell.

Suddenly, Kalotar was filled with a feeling of great foreboding. The Sense Evil spell was still in effect! But in the inn? The Unredeemed ceased the evil-sensing spell and then sat thinking. He could not deny that he had felt an aura of evil from somewhere or, more likely, someone within the inn. And if it was somebody instead of some thing, then who? Whoever it is, are they aligned with the forces of evil? Or merely under the influence of unseen malevolent magicks?

It couldn't be the Kai Lords. That the Unredeemed could not accept. Always, the Kai were above question to Kalotar, for they represented a purity which would never be tainted, never be flawed. Luthor? Most likely not. Though intolerable, the bravo was, in Kalotar's eyes, beyond the scope of good and evil, one who was amoral, not immoral. A curse to others, yes. But one actually cursed...probably not. Himself? The Unredeemed pondered this for a great while. He could easily be under the influence of magicks far greater than his whose origins would be unwholesomely evil. This he knew for reasons only he could understand, reasons which made him 'The Unredeemed'. Ultimately, Kalotar decided it would be unlikely that he could have sensed such a sorcerous source with so minor an incantation.

The rest of the inn's inhabitants seemed like quite an ordinary collection of bounty hunters and ne'er-do-wells to the wizard. There was one exception, however. The travellers from Dessi. True, their appearance tonight had been key in fending off the Houndmaster's pack, but their origin was still unexplained and their purpose unknown. Kalotar had only met with them briefly, yet was impressed enough by their Vakeros leader, Marduk, to be convinced that they were undoubtedly on the side of good. Still, could they have brought some sinister evil with them from far off lands? Was their timely arrival more than just mere coincidence, and their heroic demeanor simply a false front? Curses and questions. For now, it was enough to be faced with the hellish Houndmaster. Any other diabolical force would have to be dealt with after this particular foe's demise.

Post by Errin Famiglia, The Houndmaster XVI, "The Houndmaster Defeated"

[Kalotar]

The ragtag group of Kai Lords, mages, and brigand continued on through the woods. They had journeyed nearly all day, through torrential rain and wild forest, and now the Houndmaster's cave was thought to finally be near.

A full moon hung low in the sky. Nightfall was hours away, yet the ominous moon stood out prominently above. The trek had been a long one, for, though the Houndmaster's lair was somewhat close to town, their destination lay high up in the mountains of Moytura, their journey uphill for it's entire duration, the inclement weather only recently ceasing. Along the way, the party had gained the unwanted escort of varying pairs of wolves. The creatures always stayed out of harm's range, yet their sight never wavered from the humans they were sent to track. Occasionally, a wolf would be replaced by a newcomer, whereupon it would head back to report to it's evil master. This time, however, both wolves departed from the party's view, and neither was replaced by another wolf.

"Look." said Kalotar the Unredeemed. "It is a sign that we are near our foe. He has called back his minions to join his pack for battle. Surely, we are expected."

"Agreed," Star Hunter commented, scanning for any signs of the impending attack. Star Hunter had long since had his magic Dragon Bow out and loaded. He only hoped he would have time to get off a couple of shots before having to switch to his sword for close quarters battle. He was glad his wounds were now healed; He would need every advantage he had. "I can't say I'm looking forward to this" muttered Scarlet Falcon. Steel Fox stayed silent, but the look in his eyes showed that he was in full agreeance.

Looking very serious and deep in thought, Black Talon replied, "I feel a strange satisfaction and confidence in these animals...it's very disturbing!"

Luthor just growled. The party continued onward. Up ahead loomed a giant cave surrounded on all sides by various canine menaces. There were two score or more of the hounds, handpicked from all over Magnamund. The pack moved as one in a defensive posture around the opening of the cave, staring eagerly at the eight people who had invaded their clearing.

From out of the cave came a malevolent laugh. The mad laughter rolled on, ceasing only when the sinister form of the Houndmaster emerged from the darkness within. As before, he wielded a whip in one hand, ready to lash out at any moment. As before, the amulet upon his chest glowed dully with power.

"So," said the fiend. "You have come to put paid to the Houndmaster, eh? I think not. Rather, you have walked into a deathtrap."

"Your definition of a deathtrap is different to mine, evil one." said Scarlet Falcon defiantly.

"That bunch of mangy overgrown rats is a skugging deathtrap? I say bring on those Storgh-spawned mutts!" The highwayman roared.

"Speak your words, mortals." sneered the Master of Hounds. "They fall on deaf ears. My pack knows not but to kill. I too share their sentiment. No, do not speak. Instead, listen, for I am about to tell you how you are to die!"

The group stepped back cautiously as the Houndmaster surveyed his pack. The terrible rant went on. "For instance, you, the Brotherhood mage who wears the medallion of Vassagonian origin. For you, I have a Vassagonian Warhound. It will rend the throat upon which that bauble dangles."

"Unlikely." responded the Unredeemed.

The Houndmaster petted the warhound near him then moved on to a tremendous black dog. "And you, the Vakeros. Long have I had in my pack a murderous Hound of Death from the ruins of Castle Death in Dessi. Today it shall shed the blood of it's ancient foe...you!"

"What a laugh! I've killed more of its kind than you've ever seen, oh 'Master of Hounds'!" spat Marduk. Marduk's assistant, Ling, said nothing. He merely drew his blade and prepared for combat. The Hound of Death soon departed to make way for an overly large Doomwolf.

"This is the largest Doomwolf I have ever had as part of my pack. I say it is roughly the size of that axe-wielding giant amongst you. Shall we test this? Soon, barbarian, you shall meet your match."

Luthor snorted derisively. "Bah, I've eaten bigger mongrels than that sorry excuse for a dishrag!"

"And as for the Kai Lords," continued the Houndmaster, "I have saved the worst for last. Behold, the legend is true!"

With a malicious smile upon his cruel face, the Houndmaster stepped aside from the cave's opening to reveal the huge form of an enormous wolf emerging from the darkness. This creature was over two feet taller than the one which had been slain in Moytura the night before. Raw power surged forth from every inch of it's massive frame. Many members of the party gasped in shock as they recognized it for the ancient evil it was, a vicious, destructive force of nature. Truly, this was the Beast.

"Ah, yes," gloated the thing's master. "That one which we thought was the Beast, the one you had slain, was indeed but a smaller relative. It lead me to the true Beast. It is she that is the basis for all the old tales. Her cubs lay hidden somewhere in these hills. Soon she will return to nurture them, but only after she has destroyed the hated Kai! And now, your death is nigh!"

With a crack of his whip, the Houndmaster roared in bloodlust as his lethal legion moved in for the kill. As the pack charged, Luthor smiled. "That's more like it! Get over here you flea-bitten rat! That skugging coat is mine!"

The emboldened brigand ran towards his prize, barrelling through several akataz which had mistakenly gotten in his way. But before Luthor could even get near, the Beast had closed in on the Kai Lords in one mighty leap. It bared it's huge fangs as it's giant gnashing maw descended on it's prey. Dodging aside, Scarlet Falcon drew his mace, his bow useless at such close quarters. As he and his fellows circled the Beast, he racked his brains to find a gap in the creatures defences. For now, it would be all they could do to fend off the Beast's frenzied attacks.

And even that was not enough, for as Scarlet Falcon dodged, the Beast turned it's slavering fangs towards Steel Fox in a motion so swift that the Kai Lord barely had time to move. Though able to avoid being bitten in two, Steel Fox was not able to get out of the way of the huge head from which such a bite would be delivered. With a glancing blow to the chest from the Beast's muzzle, the young man was sent several feet back, collapsing to the ground in a daze. First the illness from the foul weather before, and now this; Luck was not on Steel Fox's side while in Moytura.

The Beast now lunged at Star Hunter as he tried to get in at least one bowshot. Star Hunter jumped back. It was just too close to use the Bow, drat it. Star Hunter's Dragon Bow vanished back into the shape of a ring. Quickly, he drew his sword. If an opportunity arose maybe he could back off enough to use the bow later.

"If any of you skuggers damage my coat, you'll feel the bite of my axe!" Luthor bellowed at the Kai Lords as he ran towards their melee.

"Uncontrollable fool!" scowled Kalotar. "I knew any strategy involving that brutish Luthor would be a difficult one. Still, he shall be taught to keep a bargain with a wizard!"

With a wave of his hand, the magic of Kalotar caused the charging form of Luthor Dragmire to instantly switch places with the mighty Doomwolf which the Houndmaster had earlier addressed as the brigand's equivolent. The Doomwolf had been still standing somewhat close to the Houndmaster; The villain was surprised by the sudden appearance of the charging hulk, but leapt out of the way in the nick of time. Luthor stopped and paused for a moment as he noticed the change in his surroundings.

He had no time to figure out what had just happened, as his thoughts were interrupted by the lashing of the Houndmaster's whip across his back. The highwayman whirled around in anger, only to face several more lashings.

"Why, you're more beast than man." said the whip's wicked wielder. "Come, I shall tame you like the rest."

With a lash of his whip, the Houndmaster ensnared Luthor's axe, and the two of them began a tug of war, the Houndmaster testing his supernatural strength against Luthor's.

Straining hard, Luthor pulled on his axe with all his might, trying to wrest it from the surprisingly strong grip of the Houndmaster. Powerful muscles bulged as the huge brigand heaved with all he could.

For a long moment, neither gained the upper hand, then a Doomwolf barreled into Luthor's side, knocking him off balance. The Houndmaster tore the axe from his grasp and hurled it away. Luthor scowled at the Doomwolf who had interrupted the fight. It was small for one of its breed, and Luthor shoved it away without much effort.

The stubborn creature leapt at the brigand again, but was forcefully batted away.

While it recovered for a third leap, Luthor slipped his torch from his sleeve and pulled out one of his many hidden flasks. As the unfortunate Doomwolf hurled itself through the air, a cloud of fire intercepted it. Howling in agony, the flaming creature sprinted off into the woods.

The Houndmaster had not been idle during the fight with the Doomwolf. Before Luthor could turn to face him once again, the Houndmaster's whip slipped over his head and tightened around his throat. The highwayman's eyes bulged as the unearthly strength of the Houndmaster began to choke the life out of him.

Reacting with the instincts of a street brawler, Luthor's foot snapped up behind him, catching the Houndmaster squarely in the groin. The angle was bad and there shouldn't have been much force behind the blow, but Luthor's impressive strength achieved its purpose. The Houndmaster's grip loosened momentarily and Luthor tore free of the whip, moving forward several paces before turning back to face his enemy.

Before the Houndmaster could react, Luthor plucked another flask from his
clothing and took an enormous pull. Having just witnessed this attack, the Houndmaster hurled himself to the side. Luthor turned with him, but not fast enough and only the trailing whip and the arm that held it were engulfed. The Houndmaster screamed and dropped his burning whip, beating at the flames on his arm. With another howl, this one of rage, the Houndmaster hurled himself at Luthor before the highwayman could spit any more fireballs. The pair fell to the ground, grappling fiercely.

Meanwhile, the pack beared down upon Marduk, Black Talon, and Ling, all three having taken a defensive stance around Kalotar.

"This isn't so bad...it's almost like the time we were by the Cener's guards...and 'those-type' warriors..." Ling trailed off.

As Ling's words sank in, Marduk's attacks and intensity increased... One by one, Marduk slew vile canine after canine...it did not matter what foe he faced...they all quickly died under his merciless blade.

Parrying a Ruellian War Dog's attack, Black Talon drew closer towards the mage and his travelling companions....and farther from the young Kai Lords... This greatly concerned the elder Kai - it was his sworn duty to protect these young acolytes, yet he was powerless to help them in their struggle, for the Houndmaster had concentrated the bulk of his canine army's attack upon the small group that was seemingly at the centre of all the action: Marduk, Black Talon, and Ling still surrounded Kalotar, and were unfortunately at the centre of this fighting. Numerous Akataz, Sommlending Hunting Hounds, Taintor Wolves, and others closed in with murderous intent.

With the intensity of the battle upon him, Marduk succumbed to the battlelust that raged within his breast...and he charged into the fray. As Black Talon engaged a demonic Dhax, he noticed out of the corner of his eye that Marduk had charged straight towards the Houndmaster, only to be stopped in his tracks by the largest canine on the battlefield second only to the enormous Beast, a huge Hound of Death. It was obvious that this dog from Dessi was now intent on obeying it's master's orders to slay the Vakeros, as it beared down upon Marduk with a murderous glint in it's black eyes.

At the same moment, Kalotar was realizing almost too late that the spell he had just cast had put him in danger. The Doomwolf which had been exchanged with Luthor was now positioned close to the mage, and had regained it's bearings.

The Unredeemed had to move quickly to cast the Net spell before the thing was too close. This he accomplished, as the large Doomwolf was entangled in a sticky web great enough for it's bulk. Then, a new enemy appeared before the mage, the Vassagonian Warhound meant to be his assassin. It leapt for Kalotar, giving the wizard no time to prepare a spell in defence.

Despite all his magical might, the Unredeemed was not wholly dependent upon spells to protect himself. He turned aside swiftly enough to avoid the Warhound's pounce, then brought the end of his staff down upon the creature's head as it landed. The desert dog collapsed unconscious from the blow.

More of the pack swarmed about. Ling and Black Talon tirelessly defended the magic user who they believed could hopefully save them all, yet was not fully prepared to defend himself.

While they defended, Marduk attacked! Seeing that his opponent was much stronger than himself, he called upon his magical talents before engaging this canine foe. "Invisible Fist!" He screamed as his sword drove towards the hound's shaking form. Before the mongrel had time to recover, Marduk had striken it twice, and had now grasped its mane with his free hand. As both the large canine and Marduk regained a little more of their senses, the fight had reached a climactic conclusion: Marduk was inches from having a new haircut (not to mention a 'little off the top' he thought) when he finally released another spell, "Energy Grasp!" With this new spell, the once powerful canine horror now returned to the earth whence it came.

The titanic struggle between the Houndmaster and the highwayman reached new heights of ferocity. The Houndmaster was no less savage than his pack, but Luthor matched him snarl for snarl.

However, Luthor quickly realized that the Houndmaster's strength exceeded his own. The brigand was surprised by this revelation, but strength wasn't the only card he had. Luthor had spent many years as a mercenary, and much of that time brawling in taverns. Now, his greater experience served him well. Luthor headbutted the Houndmaster in the face and tore one arm from his foe's powerful grasp, but the Houndmaster thrust his head forward and caught the arm in his mouth, grimacing at the horrible taste. Caught by surprise, Luthor didn't react as the Houndmaster's free hand came shot up and slammed him in the temple with incredible force. Luthor swayed slightly and was slammed again. Rather than try to tear his arm from the Houndmaster's maw, he allowed himself to fall forward, putting all his considerable weight on his trapped arm and, in turn, the Houndmaster's head.

Realizing he was in danger of being crushed, or smothered, or both, the Houndmaster bit down hard, tearing a sizeable chunk of flesh from Luthor's arm.

The brigand bellowed in pain, but the pressure did not relent. The Houndmaster frantically slammed his free hand into Luthor, trying to dislodge the huge man.

Now that Luthor's arm was free, albeit injured, he pushed hard against the Houndmaster's face, heaving himself up to a standing position. Surprised by the unexpected move, the Houndmaster did not react fast enough and Luthor's boot slammed into his temple, stunning him.

Meanwhile, as the other Kai Lords fought for their lives, Steel Fox was steadily coming to. He began to stand up, unnoticed by the Beast, yet spotted by his Kai companions. The young lord was now in a position to make a critical strike, if only he could be given the right opportunity.

Scarlet Falcon suddenly had a brainwave. Drawing back his arm, he threw his mace as hard as he could at the Beast's head. As the creature dodged, Steel Fox ran in on it's blind side and rammed his blade into an unprotected flank. The Beast turned and snapped at this unexpected attacker, but Steel Fox had already rolled backwards, leaving his broadsword dug deep in the Beast's side.

"Attack together from different sides!" Star Hunter yelled as he jumped in and attacked with his own weapon while the Beast was preoccupied by the broadsword blade in it's vitals. The Beast screamed as Star Hunter's sword wounded him as well. Star Hunter jumped back as it turned towards him, then attacked again when the Beast turned towards another, this time the knife wielding form of Scarlet Falcon.

Another blow from Star Hunter's sword caused the Beast to shudder. Moving in during this lapse, Steel Fox reached forward tentatively and grasped the hilt of his weapon, twisting it deliberately within the monster's vitals.

Staggering, the gigantic wolf reeled backwards, emitting a horrible death howl. The shriek came to an end abruptly, as did it's maker, for the Beast's huge frame now lay motionless before the victorious Kai.

Luthor heard the howl and suddenly his mind was filled with images of his new coat. Smiling broadly, he remembered the deal he had made with the wizard and snatched the amulet from the neck of his stunned opponent.

"Noooooo!!!" yelled the Houndmaster. With a maniacal burst of strength, the man broke free from Luthor's grasp, only 'man' he was soon fading to be. From all over his body sprouted a thick coat of dark fur. His hands were soon replaced by canine claws, as well as his feet, the paws now bursting through his boots. Where had once been a human face now was a muzzle amid a large snout and feral eyes. All along, the master of hounds had been a hound himself!

The werewolf which had been the Houndmaster stood up on it's haunches then bounded towards Luthor. It grasped the bandit in it's semi-human hands, it's sharp claws digging into flesh.

For once in his life, Luthor was truly surprised. The pain of the creature's claws as they dug into him brought him from his stupor and he reacted with deadly instincts. Dropping to the ground, he brought both feet up to slam the monstrosity in the stomach, hurling it away. For the third time that day, he took out a flask.

Mirroring the earlier battle with the Doomwolf, the Houndmaster leapt straight at the highwayman and passed through a cloud of fire. However, the deadly flames didn't even slow the creature and the flaming wolf-thing slammed into Luthor, knocking him to the ground.

The pair rolled over and over, extinguishing the flames, but both had been badly singed. The snapping jaws of the Houndmaster flashed for Luthor's throat, but the highwayman responded by ramming his torch into the creature's open mouth. With a wicked grin, he commanded it to come to life. The monster let out a gurgling howl and leapt away, spitting the flaming torch from it's ruined throat.

Before it could recover, Luthor hurled himself onto the creature's back, grabbing its forelegs and hugging them tight.

Luthor surged to his feet, lifting the creature off the ground. It thrashed around, but could not break free.

No longer under control of the Houndmaster, the various canines in the clearing began going their seperate ways. Most were bewildered by their situation, so much so that their only focus was to flee.

As the pack dispersed, Kalotar overlooked the battle between Luthor and the Houndmaster.

"Alas," stated the Unredeemed, "the Houndmaster's curse is revealed. And yet, how to defeat such a being? Surely, the brute can only subdue the creature for so long. Oh, how to guide him before the fool ruins everything? Perhaps..."

Again invoking his magic, the Brotherhood mage this time sent a telepathic thought to the mind of the belligerent Luthor. It was a simple thought concerning throwing the Houndmaster into the cave. The wizard hoped his guess as to how the bully's thought process worked would be correct.

Luthor didn't really know what to do with the thrashing monster, so when a little voice in his head told him to throw it into the cave, he figured he may as well follow it. Oddly, it occurred to him that it sounded a little like that uptight beanpole of a wizard, but Luthor was never one to think too deeply about things. Shifting his grip on the creature's legs, he grabbed the ends of it's forepaws and loosened his hug. The Houndmaster slipped toward the ground, it's back paws making contact with the dirt.

Before it could react, Luthor began to spin. It's forepaws firmly held, the
creature's back paws lifted off the ground, flying out horizontally with the force of the spin. It tried to snap at Luthor, but couldn't reach him as the pair continued to spin, faster and faster. The others stared openmouthed at the spectacle. Calling upon his years of navigating through a drunken stupor, Luthor timed it just right so that when he released the Houndmaster, it flew into the cave at terrific speed.

"And now," intoned Kalotar the Unredeemed solemnly, "here is the fate that befalls all those who oppose the Kai lords and their brethren of the Crystal Star. Farewell, Houndmaster!"

With this, Kalotar tapped the butt of his staff upon the ground. The immediate area began to shake and rock violently, as though an earthquake had been summoned from deep within the earth. The insides of the cave began to crack and rumble. Within seconds, the structure collapsed in upon itself, burying the evil of the Houndmaster and sealing the evildoer to his doom. As the tremor subsided, the party looked around in relief. The entire pack was gone. The Houndmaster was no more. Finally, after many hard fought battles, the threat which had endangered Moytura was over.

Kalotar finished the last of his incantations while standing over the corpse of the Beast.

"There." he said, turning to Luthor. "I have repaired it's pelt of all damage. It is yours to take, brute. Go find you a coatmaker."

"About time, mage! I've waited long enough for this skugging pelt. Here's your stinkin' amulet, now give me the gods-cursed skin!"

Kalotar shook his head in disgust and amazement, but handed over the restored pelt. Luthor decided he had earned himself another drinking binge, so resolved to go back to his cave to raid his supplies. On second thought, perhaps he should find a tailor and drink while he waited for the coat to be made.

A few seconds later, it occurred to him that he could do both. Never one for goodbyes, Luthor nodded gravely at his unlikely companions and walked away.

"There he goes," stated the Unredeemed. "A bigger fool there never was, and yet, he got what he wanted in the end. But so did I. I say good riddance."

"I think it's back to the monastery for me. I've had far too much of the great outdoors for now" said Scarlet Falcon.

Steel Fox, though Beastslayer he now was, was too worn from the whole experience to fully respond. He simply smiled in agreement with Scarlet Falcon's words.

"I'll go with you then, Scarlet Falcon. I'm anxious to see my wife and child, who should have been born by now." Responded Star Hunter. "I'm glad you buried the area, Kalotar. I wouldn't want the Houndmaster or those Beast pups about. Are you sure they're dead? I mean, can you scry or something and tell for sure?"

"Surely, young Kai lord," came Kalotar's reply, "the Houndmaster is no more. As for the Beast's possible kin, they could be anywhere is this vast mountain range, if they exist at all. From this ordeal, I am drained; I cannot dedicate myself to such a search any time soon. We shall have to let sleeping Beasts lie."

"I think maybe that female Beast was the Houndmaster's mate," Star Hunter commented.

"An interesting theory." noted the Unredeemed, but his mind seemed to be on other things.

As the group went to return to town, Kalotar asked Marduk to wait behind with him as the others headed forth.

"Sure, although I am not sure what you truly want." stated Marduk.

"Forgive me, sir," started the Unredeemed, "but I have reason to suspect that one amongst your company is imbued with the taint of evil, an aura I unexpectedly discovered the other night, yet has eluded me ever since. I couldn't help but tie it to your arrival in Moytura. I have every reason to believe you are to be trusted, but if you be foe, than show yourself now, else face the wrath of Kalotar in the future."

"What?!" replied an upset Marduk. "After we have risked our lives to help defend you, these young Kai Lords, and this town, you doubt us still??!!"

"I am sorry that I have offended." answered Kalotar. "My heart and my mind tell me that your word is good, that no servant of evil would risk their lives to help us as you did today. I accept that you and your fellows are not evil, and hope you'll still think of me as a friend. Tell me this then: Did your company encounter anything special along the way from Dessi? Perhaps a magician cursed you, or you came upon an item tinted with evil. Such events could have happened unbeknownst to any of your party. Please, think. My new suspicion is that it is you and your friends that are in danger, not myself and the Kai."

"Little chance of that. Only a few attacks by animals and bounty hunters," related Marduk. "Although... I did find something a little odd once I touched this, a Silver Brooch which I found upon a hunter killed by the Houndmaster's pack."

"A brooch found upon a slain bounty hunter?" inquired the Unredeemed.

"Strange that you'd be drawn to such an object. Hold still while I focus my magic upon it, please."

With this, Kalotar concentrated on the Brooch pinned to Marduk's cloak, invoking the spell 'Acquisition'. Had the Silver Brooch been an ordinary item or one of minor magic, the spell would bring the thing to him. As it were, the incantation had no effect.

"So!" exclaimed the startled Brotherhood mage. "It refuses my spell, just as the Houndmaster's amulet did. Lord Marduk, remove that brooch from your person at once! It is cursed!!"

"If it be cursed, have it then!" cried Marduk as he tossed it to the earth.

"Stand back now, my friend." continued Kalotar. "Methinks I should check in other ways to make sure that this item is the root of what I sensed the other night. Though my Acquisition spell does indeed have a safeguard which protects me from bringing cursed objects into my possession, it can fail for other reasons too. Only 'Sense Evil' will tell us for certain!"

That said, Kalotar concentrated on the very spell he had forementioned. Within seconds, he had his answer. The Unredeemed grimly turned away from the Brooch upon the ground to face Marduk. The stooped wizard's gaze was one of pity, as well as understanding.

"Oh, woe to thee, my Vakeros ally." said he. "Whatever this brooch's curse may be, it is nothing compared to the evil which I now detect nearby, an evil wholly like the one I felt the other night. It comes not from the brooch, nor from where the Houndmaster lies dead in the rubble, nor even the fiend's amulet which I now possess; Rather, it emanates from you!"

Mutely accepting the words that the mage had spoken, Marduk finally accepted what had happened to him in days past... a lifetime ago to the Vakeros warrior. Yet, questions and sorrow welled up from inside... Marduk was too overcome with grief to speak of the past.

"Worry not, my lord." said a caring voice to Marduk. "You have a friend and compatriot in Kalotar the Unredeemed. I too know how it feels to be on the side of good, yet marked by evil. You are welcome to stay at my dwelling within the Kai monastary for as long as it takes for us to root out the cause of this cursed aura upon you."

Composing himself a little, Marduk simply said "Thank you."

And then, a few moments later, with more determination, he said "I will become a Kai Lord someday, no matter what the cost!"

"Indeed you shall." stated Kalotar. "And no curse shall stop you; Rather, we'll stop it! In due time, that is. For now, we will have to settle for bringing an end to but one curse today."

With this, the Unredeemed held up the evil amulet of the Houndmaster.

"Let's hope it stays buried."

Post by Darleen Masten, The Houndmaster XVIII, "Star Hunter's Return"

[Star Hunter]

A very tired Star Hunter arrived at the Kai monastery with the rest of his Kai companions that had returned with him. He dismounted and removed his saddle bags and bedroll. A Kai student on stable duty took the reins of his mount. Others took the mounts of his companions.

"I'll take care of him, sir."

"Thanks lad." Star Hunter winced in pain as he slung his saddle bags over one shoulder and his bedroom over the other. He was still a bit sore from his wounds from fighting the Houndmaster.

As Star Hunter entered the monastery he met up with his friend the Kai Lady Fire Storm.

"Fire Storm!"

"It's about time ye got back." Fire Storm grinned. "Let me take some of yer gear. I'm here to guide ye to yer new quarters."

Star Hunter gladly let her take his saddle bags.

"The baby. Is it and May alright?"

"They're fine."

"What did we have a boy or a girl?"

"Oh, no. I promised I wouldn't tell ye."

"Oh, come on. Have a heart."

"Nay. I promised."

They arrived at the new quarters and entered. Lady May was sitting on the sofa. She looked up, saw Star Hunter, smiled and rushed into his arms, barely giving him time to drop his bedroll. Star Hunter stifled his gasp of pain as May grabbed him.

"Your hurt!" May cried concerned.

"It's nothing my love," Star Hunter smiled, "It's just my side. I'm mostly healed now. You'll just have to be a little more gentle with me for a while."

May sighed and gently kissed him. Fire Storm put down the rest of his saddle bags and quietly left.

"Oh, my darling. I'm so sorry I was away so long and missed the birth."

"I know. I know."

More kissing.

"So tell me. Did we have a boy or a girl?"

May smiled, "Come and see." She lead him into a bedroom. Star Hunter looked into the crib and gasped. There were two bundles of joy there! Both were clad in a one piece blue jumpsuit like outfit. Both had black hair and blue eyes. They looked identical.

"Tw-ooo?"

"Yes, two boys."

The babies looked up at their father and giggled. May laughed.

"This is our first born Tor, named after my uncle as we agreed. And this one is Justin, named after my father. I hope you don't mind."

"Of course not my love. Well, hello, little ones. I'm your father." He gently offered each son a finger. The fingers were grabbed. Star Hunter felt a tender link shoot through his fingers and wrap around his heart.

"How in the world do you tell them apart?"

"Well, Tor has a widows peak in his hair line and Justin doesn't. See?" May showed him.

"Yes, I see. When were they born?"

"A week ago. Lady Amethyst delivered them."

"Did you have a hard time?"

"At first but as soon as Lady Amethyst arrived, the pain eased. She is a gifted healer."

"I'll thank her the first chance I get and find some way to repay her."

May picked up little Tor and showed Star Hunter how to hold the infant before transferring him to his father's arms. Then May picked up Justin and the proud parent went back into the living room and sat on the sofa. Star Hunter found himself holding a son in each arm. He smiled down at his sons and cooed to them. They laughed.

May was so happy she thought she would burst. All too soon the babies yawned and stretched.

"Its time for their nap," May announced, taking Tor from his father.

The babies were returned to their crib. Quietly the proud parents left the room, leaving the door ajar so they could hear the babies.

"Oh, no!" Star Hunter cried, smacking his forehead, then wincing in pain at the move.

"What is it? What's wrong?" May asks concerned.

"The Dragon Bow."

"The Dragon Bow?"

"The dwarves told me it made its bearer very fertile"

"You mean that's why we had twins?"

"Probably. We'll have to talk to Amethyst right away about a magical preventative or you'll soon have more babies."

"Don't you dare!"

"What?"

"I want lots of babies."

"But not right away. Your body needs time to recover. Besides two babies is enough for us to handle for now."

"Amethyst has healed me completely."

"Now May."

She kissed him. How they got to the bedroom Star Hunter didn't know.

"Are you sure my love?" Star Hunter asked one last time.

"Oh, yes, my darling. Yes!"

Star Hunter smiled and soon they are making love.
